iPad mini Gets Revamped with Performance Upgrades and OLED Display

Apple has unveiled a revamped version of its iPad mini, packing several upgrades into the compact tablet but also increasing its price tag.
The new iPad mini boasts significant performance improvements thanks to its 5-core A20 Pro SoC processor, which Apple claims is up to 2.7 times faster in graphics processing and up to 4.5 times faster in AI workloads compared to its predecessor's A17 Pro chip.
This upgrade comes as no surprise given that Apple typically updates the iPad mini every two years, resulting in substantial performance enhancements with each new generation. The tablet is also available in three storage configurations, including a top-end 512GB model featuring an extra CPU core and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.
In terms of processing capabilities, the A20 Pro chip should be better suited to handling demanding on-device AI tasks, thanks to Apple's Intelligent Assistant technology and Siri AI support. Notably, the new iPad mini likely comes with increased RAM compared to its predecessor, although Apple has not officially disclosed this information.
Apple has also improved the tablet's charging capabilities, allowing it to reach 50 percent battery life in just 30 minutes when paired with a compatible adapter. However, other aspects of the device remain unchanged, including its battery life claims.
The introduction of the new iPad mini comes with some downsides, as Apple has reduced color options to just two choices: Midnight and Starlight.
The iPad mini has undergone significant upgrades, but one of the most notable changes is its switch to an OLED panel. This means it joins the iPad Pro as the only other iPad in Apple's lineup to feature this type of display.
The new OLED screen boasts a higher peak brightness than its predecessor, reaching up to 1,200 nits of HDR brightness. In comparison, the previous model topped out at a lower 500 nits of SDR brightness. The switch to an OLED panel has also resulted in a thinner and lighter design for the iPad mini.
The new device's dimensions have been tweaked slightly, with it being nearly the same width as before but now measuring just 5.4mm thick - down from its predecessor's 6.3mm thickness. This reduction in size is likely due to the more efficient OLED display.
The larger 8.5-inch screen on the new iPad mini owes its increased size to thinner bezels, which have been reduced by a significant 24 percent. Despite some users expressing disappointment at the lack of ProMotion technology, Apple's Dave Pakula notes that OLED's faster pixel response time provides an overall smooth display experience.
The new iPad mini boasts a significant display upgrade over its predecessor, particularly for users working with HDR content. This improvement is likely to benefit creatives who rely on accurate color representation and smooth visuals.
Despite retaining its familiar design, the latest iPad mini has earned Apple's first water-resistance rating of IP67. One factor contributing to this achievement is the adoption of a novel Acoustic Display system in place of traditional speaker grilles. This innovative setup involves strategically placed tweeters and woofers that work together to deliver enhanced audio.
This Acoustic Display technology produces punchier bass, clearer treble, and increased overall volume. The result is a more immersive listening experience for users. Interestingly, this approach bears some resemblance to the Huawei P30 Pro's acoustic display, which was designed primarily to replace earpiece speakers in phone calls rather than provide a full stereo speaker system.
Connectivity has also seen significant improvements with the introduction of Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Moreover, Apple's new C2 cellular modem promises up to 50 percent faster cellular data speeds compared to its predecessor.
The iPad mini's camera setup remains largely unchanged, but the front-facing camera is now positioned along the tablet's longer edge, making it more suitable for video calls in landscape orientation.
The latest iPad mini has been upgraded to run on iPadOS 27, bringing improved features such as enhanced dictation capabilities and customizable Siri settings. This includes the option to adjust Siri's speaking pace and expressiveness, making it easier for users to interact with their device.
With its powerful new processor, the iPad mini is well-suited for gaming, thanks in part to the availability of popular titles like Control and Death Stranding on the App Store. The 5-core A20 Pro SoC in lower-end storage variants provides a significant performance boost over previous models, making this tablet a strong option for gamers who value portability.
