A significant shift has been observed in the use of GLP-1 medications among Americans. According to recent research by EY-Parthenon, more people are now taking these drugs for weight loss than for their originally intended purpose.

The study found that roughly 54% of individuals using semaglutide medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy do so specifically to shed pounds. This trend surpasses the number of people using them for other medical reasons.

As the trend of using GLP-1s for weight loss continues to grow, consumer packaged goods makers are taking notice. Gone are the days when they thought this was just a fleeting phenomenon.

The use of these medications is having a ripple effect on consumers' shopping habits, particularly in the clothing sector. Many users are finding that their rapidly changing body shape requires a wardrobe refresh, with 72% of GLP-1 users reportedly downsizing to smaller sizes after losing weight.

As a result, some users are increasing their spending on fitness services, such as gym memberships, while others are switching apparel brands in search of more fitted styles.

The affordability of GLP-1 medications has improved significantly following a deal between the Trump administration and manufacturers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. The agreement resulted in lower prices for Ozempic and Wegovy, which are now available to patients at a cost of $150 to $350 per month, down from approximately $1,000.

The reduction in cost has also been made possible through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, which provides eligible Medicare beneficiaries with access to these medications at an even lower price of $50 a month. Additionally, researchers are exploring the potential clinical applications of GLP-1s beyond weight loss, including their influence on the body's reward system and its impact on behaviors such as excessive spending or gambling.
