Reports have emerged that the first Ebola patients confirmed in Kenya and Nigeria may have encountered each other at Uganda's Entebbe International Airport earlier this month.

According to African health officials, both patients traveled through the airport on October 3, raising concerns about potential exposure or interaction between them.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched an investigation into the matter, with Dr. Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness and response, stating that some sort of interaction between the two cases at the airport is being looked into.

This latest development comes as health officials scramble to contain a rapidly spreading outbreak that originated in Congo in May and has since spread to three other African countries.

The continent's most geographically widespread Ebola outbreak in history is unfolding, with Nigeria announcing its first case just this week.

The Nigerian patient who contracted Ebola is believed to have had limited contact with others while traveling through Uganda in September before arriving in Nigeria early last month. According to officials, she spent two weeks on vacation in Uganda and then returned to her home country.

As a result of this new case, health authorities in Nigeria are scrambling to track down those who may have come into contact with the patient. So far, 44 individuals have been identified as close contacts who require monitoring for symptoms of Ebola.

Further investigation has revealed that Uganda is likely linked to both the Nigerian and Kenyan cases of Ebola. The East African country had previously declared itself free of the virus in June after recording 20 cases.

Kenya has also reported nine cases, all of which are believed to have originated from a traveler who passed through Uganda on their way back from Congo.

Meanwhile, officials from the World Health Organization say they were not informed about any travel by the Nigerian patient to other countries during her recent trip.

Data from the Africa CDC reveals that in many Ebola outbreaks, a significant proportion of cases go undetected among known contacts, with only 20% of confirmed cases coming from people who were previously identified as being at risk. Furthermore, about 60% of deaths attributed to the disease occur within communities outside of treatment centers.

The situation is particularly dire in some hotspots in Congo, where experts warn that the outbreak is spiraling out of control.
