US President Donald Trump has announced a halt in strikes on each other's energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine, claiming it is an "energy ceasefire that will take effect immediately.

According to Trump's post on his Truth Social network, both parties have agreed to the ceasefire, which he urges should not be broken by either side. He did not provide any further details about how this agreement came about or what specific steps would be taken to implement it.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded quickly to Trump's announcement, saying that a ceasefire in energy infrastructure was news to him and that he needed more information before he could confirm the deal. He expressed willingness to accept an agreement if Russia agrees to stop targeting Ukraine's energy resources.

Zelenskyy had earlier reiterated his stance on stopping strikes on Russian oil refineries, contingent on the Kremlin halting its own energy attacks on Ukrainian targets. The Ukrainian president emphasized that his country was ready to accept a ceasefire, but he needed clear information about when it would begin and how it would be implemented.

The US president's move to broker an agreement between Russia and Ukraine has sparked controversy, particularly over the issue of diesel fuel. According to Trump, his country needs to import diesel from Russia due to a global shortage caused by Ukrainian attacks on Russian facilities.

This assertion contradicts earlier claims that Iran was responsible for the shortage, which has seen fuel prices rise ahead of the US midterm elections next month. The move is seen as an attempt to bring down high fuel costs and appease voters. However, it raises questions about the timing and implications of this decision.

The agreement also appears to undercut recent US sanctions imposed on Russia aimed at reducing Moscow's energy revenues and funding for its war efforts in Ukraine. This has sparked criticism from those who see the move as a betrayal of Ukraine's cause. In response, European leaders have expressed their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has publicly backed Zelenskyy, stating that she fully supported" calls for a ceasefire to protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in both Ukraine and Russia.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has taken a toll on global energy supplies, with repeated strikes by Russian forces targeting Ukraine's power plants and transmission lines in major cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv.

In response to these attacks, Ukraine has launched long-range strikes against key Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries and other facilities critical to Moscow's refining capacity and fuel supplies. This escalation of the conflict has raised concerns about the stability of global energy markets and the potential for further disruptions.

The latest strike by Ukrainian forces targeted a data center operated by Yandex, Russia's leading technology company, marking the third such attack on its facilities in just four days.
