Lithium battery pioneer Chen Liquan and radar knowledgeable Ben De received the national top sci-tech award for 2025 on Wednesday.

They obtained the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award at a gathering in Beijing combining the national science and expertise award convention, the final assemblies of the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the eleventh National Congress of the China Association for Science and Technology. The assembly was held to honor the nation’s distinguished scientists and analysis achievements.

Chen, 86, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a researcher on the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Throughout a five-decade tutorial profession, Chen pioneered solid-state ionics analysis in China, led the event of the nation’s first lithium-ion battery, and proposed an in-situ solidification technique for solid-state electrolytes — driving basic breakthroughs and advancing their industrialization.

Chen has aligned his analysis with national strategic wants and was acknowledged for his pivotal position in establishing China’s main place in next-generation battery applied sciences.

Ben, born in 1938 in Changchun, Jilin province, is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a researcher at China Electronics Technology Group Co. He has devoted his profession to advancing China’s radar methods, making nice contributions to national protection.

Ben led the event of China’s first ground-based, ultra-long-range phased-array early-warning radar and China’s airborne pulsed Doppler fire-control radar — breakthroughs that underpinned the institution of China’s land, sea, air, and space-based early-warning and surveillance structure.
