A recent study has revealed that relying on artificial intelligence (AI) for quick answers can have a detrimental effect on motivation and cognitive abilities.

The research, which was presented at the 2026 Conference on Language Modeling in San Francisco earlier this month, focused on the impact of AI assistance on arithmetic and reading comprehension tasks. Investigators found that individuals who relied on AI chatbots to solve problems performed worse and were more likely to give up when the assistance was removed compared to those who did not use AI for quick answers.

According to experts, this phenomenon is known as "cognitive offloading, a process where mental work is shifted onto an external tool. A growing body of research suggests that cognitive offloading can harm long-term learning and critical thinking abilities.

Study first author Grace Liu emphasized the importance of desirable difficulties" in building skills over time. She noted that AI assistance may remove this productive struggle, leading to a lack of robust independent capability even when individuals receive the correct answer in the moment.

The study recruited 1,222 participants for three randomized controlled experiments, including two sets of mathematical fraction problems and reading comprehension questions. Each experiment took between 13 to 15 minutes to complete, with no overlap between the different groups of participants.

The researchers designed their experiments to investigate how AI assistance affects cognitive abilities in various tasks. The results of this study have significant implications for our understanding of the role of AI in learning and problem-solving processes.

Researchers conducted an experiment involving 354 participants who were randomly assigned to two groups: one that had access to an AI chatbot and another group without it.

Both groups received the same set of 12 fraction problems, but the AI group could get instant answers or clues by prompting the chatbot. The researchers removed the AI assistant abruptly for a final set of three fractions, which all participants worked on regardless of their initial group assignment.

The experiment allowed participants to skip problems without penalty, and they were informed that there was no negative consequence for incorrect answers. If participants got a problem wrong, they could access the correct answer to learn from their mistakes.

When AI assistance was available, participants in the AI group performed better on fractions and showed less likelihood of giving up compared to those in the other group. However, when the AI chatbot was removed, performance dropped significantly for the AI group, with more skipped or failed problems.

This sudden shift in performance suggests that relying on AI may hinder unaided problem-solving skills, persistence, and motivation.

A larger group of participants was involved in the second experiment, which replicated the first study with some modifications to its design. These changes included adding an initial test phase to weed out individuals who struggled with basic problems from the start. This added layer helped ensure that only those capable of performing at a certain level were allowed to proceed.

The findings of this second trial closely mirrored those of the initial experiment, pointing to a pattern where AI assistance for straightforward tasks has a detrimental effect on perseverance and drive to complete these tasks without support. The researchers noted that the use of AI to obtain direct solutions appeared particularly problematic in terms of motivation.

Calculators can also be used to offload computations, which may lead to similar declines in independent performance, acknowledged Liu. However, she highlighted that the main reason for focusing on AI is its ability to enable people to transfer reasoning skills across various tasks and domains.

The team conducted a third experiment to investigate how AI assistance affects reading comprehension, an activity that draws heavily on meaning-making skills and mental-model construction. This cognitive process involves building internal representations of external reality. Two groups were formed: one with access to AI support and another without, referred to as the control group.

Both groups received five comprehension questions before being given AI chatbot access was disabled, after which each participant received an additional three questions to answer on their own. The results from this trial echoed those of its predecessors, indicating that reduced persistence appears to be a widespread outcome of relying on AI for cognitive tasks.

The more people rely on AI assistance, the higher their decline in persistence. This is according to researchers who have been studying the effects of cognitive offloading on human skills and abilities.

One possible explanation for this trend is that individuals become accustomed to receiving immediate answers from AI and therefore view any method that takes longer as inefficient. However, studies suggest that persistence through difficulty is essential for acquiring new skills and learning.

Scientists acknowledge that they still have a limited understanding of how frequent instances of cognitive offloading impact lasting competence and independent ability. To gain a more comprehensive picture, researchers would need to track the same individuals over time and regularly measure their progress across various tasks.

Research indicates that an overreliance on AI can erode human cognitive fitness and mastery of subjects. As such, experts recommend designing AI models and chatbots to provide guidance and instructions towards finding solutions rather than providing the answers directly.

The long-term goal is to augment human abilities through technology, rather than replacing them entirely. This approach would allow individuals to develop their skills and capabilities while leveraging AI as a tool for support and enhancement.

Researchers have found that even brief exposure to AI assistance can undermine human motivation and performance in tasks. A study published in 2026 revealed that individuals who use AI tools for just 10 minutes experience a significant drop in persistence and independent skills.

The study suggested that this decline is not solely due to the reliance on technology, but rather the way it alters one's perception of their abilities. Participants' confidence and self-efficacy decreased as they became accustomed to relying on AI, ultimately leading to reduced motivation and performance.

This phenomenon raises important questions about the long-term effects of AI integration in various aspects of life. As humans increasingly rely on technology for support, it is crucial to consider how this may impact our capacity for independent thought and action.
