Zhong Jue, born in 1936 in east China’s Jiangxi Province, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a number one skilled in mechanical engineering. She has acquired a number of national-level science and expertise awards and initiated China’s first microelectronic units program, contributing to China’s development in aluminum processing expertise.

In her youth, Zhong was pressured to flee in the course of the conflict in opposition to Japanese aggression. She and her household as soon as walked from south China’s Guangxi to southwest China’s Chongqing in search of security, an expertise that deeply formed her perception in nationwide energy.

In 1955, she enrolled in the metallurgical equipment program at then Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology, which is now often called the University of Science and Technology Beijing. At a time when few ladies selected heavy-industry disciplines, she dedicated herself to the sector out of a way of dedication to nationwide growth. She graduated with honors in 1960 and commenced instructing at then Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, now the Central South University.

In the Nineteen Seventies, Zhong’s analysis staff was tasked with diagnosing a failure in an advanced imported hot-rolling mill in Wuhan of central China’s Hubei Province. Based on experiments and mechanical evaluation, the staff recognized design and manufacturing defects as the basis trigger, overturning preliminary assumptions by overseas consultants that the failure was attributable to operational error.

In the Nineteen Nineties, China confronted a scarcity of high-quality hot-rolled aluminum plates and relied closely on imports. Zhong and her staff made key breakthroughs in associated applied sciences, lowering dependence on imported high-quality aluminum plates and supporting main nationwide engineering initiatives.

In 2003, Zhong proposed the idea of “extreme manufacturing,” referring to the manufacturing of high-performance methods below excessive scales and harsh circumstances. The idea was later included into China’s Medium- and Long-Term Program for Science and Technology Development (2006-2020).

Now in her 90s, Zhong continues to work carefully with younger researchers, and stays lively in front-line analysis in advanced manufacturing and aerospace engineering. (Xinhua/Chen Sihan)
