Ukrainian war veterans have taken on a challenging fitness competition in Valencia, Spain, as part of their recovery from combat injuries.

Dmytro Bykhovchenko, who lost both legs in action, has become a meticulous planner since his injury, working out every detail of his daily routine to ensure accessibility and ease of movement. This includes planning the best routes for trips, arranging for cars with ramps or handrails, and anticipating any potential obstacles.

Bykhovchenko recently completed his most ambitious plan yet by participating in an international fitness competition known as HYROX, which combines eight 1-kilometer runs with eight intense workouts involving sled pushes, rowing, weighted carries, and sandbag lunges. The event's disabled category included amputee athletes.

Bykhovchenko finished the course using a wheelchair to navigate around the track and completing floor-based exercises as planned. He attributed his participation in the competition to its positive impact on his mental and emotional well-being, saying that sport helps him cope with the challenges he faces.

Bykhovchenko's participation in the international race was a testament to his resilience and determination, considering he lost both legs three years ago during the intense fighting at Avdiivka. The Russian drone attack had dropped an explosive into his trench, causing significant damage and delaying his evacuation for hours.

The team's performance marked a milestone in their recovery, not just physically but also emotionally. Their presence at the event sent a powerful message about Ukraine's ongoing struggle against more than 4 and a half years of war. It was a beacon of hope amidst the turmoil.

Oleh Tserkovnyy, an endurance athlete and team member, emphasized the significance of their participation. "It means a lot to be here and show the world what a veteran of the Russia-Ukraine war is," he said. The team aimed to inspire others with their actions, highlighting the strength and determination that defined them.

Some team members were relatively new to sports, relying on volunteer trainers who dedicated hours to help them prepare for the competition. Yasia Shandrii, a fitness trainer in Kyiv, had worked closely with Bykhovchenko ahead of the event, providing crucial support as he trained for the circuits.

The amputee athletes from Ukraine have a diverse range of injuries, including double lower-limb amputations, single-leg amputations, high arm amputations, and below-the-knee amputations.

For some, participating in sports provides an escape from the constant reminders of war. Oleksandr Dashko, who lost his left leg due to a combat injury, says that engaging in physical activity helps him forget about the conflict. He notes that every interaction with friends is now centered around the war and its aftermath, making it difficult to disconnect.

Through their determination and hard work, these athletes are able to put aside their struggles for a few hours each day, finding solace in the mental clarity that comes from pushing themselves physically.
