President Donald Trump’s speech on the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Friday, July 24, was closely scrutinized throughout a group debate on an episode of NCS’s NewsNight with Abby Phillips.
On the night time of the annual dinner, which was postponed after the unique occasion in April was rescheduled following being interrupted by a shooting, NewsNight host Abby, 37, mentioned the July White House Correspondents’ Dinner with a roundtable of media specialists. NCS political analyst Harry Enten, 38, was fast to slam Trump’s speech, calling it a “bore” as it went on to tear the commander-in-chief’s remarks.
Harry criticized Trump having “low energy” when he gave his speech, which the information journalist claimed to be a “bore,” quipping that he might “replay [Trump’s] speech and…fall asleep.”

Several agreed with Harry on X, with one writing, “I would classify it as his most boring speech to date. Low T even.”
Another commented, “Trump just drifted aimlessly from grievance to grievance without any coherent connection. Unlike previous presidents had the charm and wit to engage in good-natured self-mockery, Trump can only rehash old grievances with childish, demeaning insults.”
Though some felt Trump’s speech was underwhelming, there have been a few who believed it to be good.

“What? Everyone I watched the speech with in real life loved it. Harry Enten can get bent!” one exclaimed in protection of Trump’s remarks.
Trump’s speech had been extremely anticipated after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt teased that his speech can be “unifying” and “vicious” throughout a press briefing forward of the dinner this Friday.
“The President’s speech will be a combination of unifying yet vicious, and serious yet hilarious, all at the same time, if you can imagine that,” she acknowledged. “One thing I can assure you, it will be entertaining.”

Ahead of Trump’s speech on the rescheduled dinner, NCS reporters questioned what Karoline meant by “unifying yet vicious,” seemingly showing to view the outline as oxymoronic.
“But today’s new official White House preview, a quote ‘combination of unifying, yet vicious,’” anchor Jim Sciutto stated. “I mean, can you be unifying and vicious? I don’t get it.”
Brian Stelter continued, “I’ve never heard a speech where someone’s unifying and vicious. But maybe we will tonight. This is definitely not going to be a ‘kumbaya moment,’ though. There’s no way it can be, because the tension is inescapable.”
“The push and pull between the president and the press. It’s always there, but it’s, of course, much more heightened during Trump 2.0. This is a president who wants attention but rejects accountability. And so it always goes downhill in one way or another.”
