A judge in Ensenada, Mexico, has handed down a lengthy prison sentence to three men involved in the 2024 murders of two Australian brothers and their American friend.

The victims were Callum and Jake Robinson from Australia, along with their American friend Carter Redd Rhoad. Their bodies were discovered in May 2024, prompting an investigation into the killings.

As part of the case, at least four individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in the crime. The suspects have now been found guilty of murder, robbery with violence, and vehicle theft with violence.

In a landmark ruling, Judge Jesús Gerardo García sentenced each of the three convicted men to 158 years and nine months in prison. This decision brings an end to a protracted legal process that has garnered significant attention worldwide.

The case has taken a toll on Mexico's tourism industry, particularly among surfers who frequent the region known for its stunning beaches.

The investigation into the murders led to the arrest of suspect García, also known as "el Kekas," who was identified by authorities as the suspected gunman in the killings of the three foreigners.

García's alleged involvement in a range of crimes prior to the surfers' deaths has raised concerns about the prevalence of violent crime in the region. According to state authorities, he had been involved in drug dealing, domestic violence, and vehicle theft in Ensenada, among other offenses.

The arrest was announced by the Baja California prosecutor's office on May 5, 2024, following a thorough investigation into the murders. The move came after several days of searching for suspects and gathering evidence at the crime scene.

A well over 15 meters deep had been used to dispose of the victims' bodies, which were eventually discovered on May 3, 2024, bringing an end to the search efforts by local authorities and their counterparts from other parts of Mexico.

The investigation into the killings of Australian and US surfers in Mexico has led to the arrest and sentencing of several individuals involved. García's former partner, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, was found in possession of a cellphone belonging to one of the victims.

Silva Raya agreed to an abbreviated trial and was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated robbery with violence and vehicle theft with violence. State prosecutor María Elena Andrade revealed that the attackers had intended to steal the tires from the foreigners' pickup truck, but their plan turned violent when the victims resisted.

The prosecutor alleged that after one of the victims initially resisted, the attackers pulled out a gun and killed them, before turning on the other two.
