Germany's Condor Airlines is adjusting its strategy for flying to the United States, shifting from smaller cities to larger metropolitan areas.

The airline, known for its distinctive striped planes, has traditionally offered summer flights to destinations such as Anchorage, Baltimore, and San Antonio.

However, following the end of a partnership with Lufthansa, Condor's Frankfurt-based operation is now seeking to forge new connections with major US cities and expand its network of feeder routes.

Condor's CEO, Peter Gerber, recently highlighted the need for "feed" passengers connecting from shorter flights onto longer routes, given the airline's large long-haul fleet based in Frankfurt.

Travelers from various US cities can already connect between American Airlines and Condor at several major airports, including Boston Logan International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and soon O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.

Condor's expansion plans include launching daily flights from Frankfurt Airport to O'Hare International Airport starting May 14, 2027, through September 12, 2027. These flights will be operated by an Airbus A330-900 aircraft with a specific seating configuration: 30 business class seats, 64 premium economy seats, and 216 economy seats.

Condor's transformation into a hub-and-spoke leisure airline was triggered by Lufthansa's decision to end its agreement that would have sent connecting passengers to Condor via Frankfurt. This move led to a lengthy legal battle between the two airlines, which ultimately ended in Lufthansa's favor in 2025.

Condor is now working to establish links between Frankfurt Airport and key destinations with strong demand for travel to or from Frankfurt. The airline has recently added flights to several cities, including Barcelona, London Gatwick, and Venice Marco Polo Airport, all originating from FRA this year.

While Condor aims to expand its network, the airline's CEO acknowledged that it cannot compete with Lufthansa at its largest base, stating that "We will never be able to build up the broadness of the Lufthansa network."

Condor Airlines is shifting its focus towards larger US cities as it looks to expand its network in the American market. The airline's CEO sees a significant opportunity in Latin America, particularly in Mexico, for future long-haul expansion.

This move comes after Condor realized that operating nonstop flights between Europe and mid-size U.S. cities may no longer be viable without connecting passengers from Lufthansa. As a result, the airline will prioritize larger markets to compensate for the loss of these connections.

Condor's partnership with Alaska Airlines remains unaffected by this change in strategy. The airline will continue to operate flights to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and Portland International Airport (PDX), both major hubs for Alaska Airlines.

Through its interline agreements with airlines like JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines, Condor can reach a wider audience without needing to operate flights to every destination itself.
