United Airlines has been refining its premium product for over a decade since launching Polaris business class, and recent changes are set to elevate the experience even further.

The airline's initial rollout of Polaris took around seven years to complete, with most of its wide-body fleet eventually receiving the upgraded seats, which offered a significant improvement over the outdated side-by-side configurations that were becoming increasingly common in the industry.

However, the rapid evolution of air travel has forced carriers to continually enhance their premium offerings to stay competitive. In response, United recently unveiled an all-new version of Polaris, dubbed "Elevated, which promises to raise the bar for business class travel.

The new Elevated Polaris features suite-style seats with closing doors, state-of-the-art technology, and upgraded amenities and menus, marking a significant upgrade over its predecessor. This revamped product is currently being rolled out across United's fleet, although passengers on certain routes may still find themselves seated in the older Polaris configuration.

As the rollout of Elevated Polaris continues, flyers are left to navigate the complexities of booking seats and understanding what to expect from their next United flight. In this guide, we'll break down the key details of United Polaris, including how to identify which aircraft feature the new Elevated seats, and offer tips on how to secure a seat without breaking the bank.

United's business class upgrade, known as Polaris, has undergone significant changes over the years. The good news for travelers is that the airline's fleet is largely consistent when it comes to business-class seats and amenities on board. This is due in part to United completing the rollout of its first-generation Polaris business class across almost its entire wide-body long-haul fleet in 2023.

However, there are some notable exceptions. In 2026, United announced plans for an updated version of Polaris, featuring suite-style seats with closing doors and Studio suites located at the front of the cabin, offering extra space and amenities. These new seats can be found on newly delivered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

Travelers should note that these newer aircraft are not yet widely available, and United has not announced plans to retrofit its existing fleet with the updated Polaris seats. This means that passengers will need to keep an eye out for specific aircraft configurations when booking their flights.

In addition to the mix of old and new aircraft, there is another type of plane in United's fleet that stands out from the rest: the Boeing 777-200. These planes feature a much older business class configuration, which can be found on certain domestic flights, including some routes to Hawaii.

United's Polaris business class offers direct aisle access across most of its fleet, with seating arranged in either a 1-2-1 or 1-1-1 layout. This means that passengers will have plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy their flight.

The Polaris business class cabin on United's 787-9 aircraft features a unique layout that varies depending on the section of the plane. In the front section, seats follow a classic reverse-herringbone design, where side seats are angled toward the windows and center seats face each other.

This configuration is designed to provide passengers with ample space to stretch out and enjoy their flight. The seats in this section are arranged so that those on either side of the aisle are alternately closer to the window or the aisle, while those in the middle are positioned for optimal comfort.

In contrast, the back section of the cabin has a different configuration, where center pods have their seatbacks closer together and their footrests angled toward the aisle. This suggests that passengers seated in these areas may have less space to stretch out than those in the front section.

The seats themselves offer a comfortable width of around 20-21 inches and recline into lie-flat beds measuring 76-78 inches in length. The wider armrests between seats also provide added comfort for passengers sitting together.

The Polaris business class experience on United's 787-9 aircraft offers a range of seating options, with the front section featuring a classic reverse-herringbone layout and the back section having a unique configuration designed to accommodate couples and travel companions.

The Polaris Elevated seats on United's aircraft offer a high level of comfort and luxury, with each seat measuring 21 inches wide and reclining to create a 78-inch lie-flat bed. This significant upgrade in seating allows passengers to fully relax during long-haul flights.

One notable feature of the new Polaris Elevated seats is their ability to provide an added level of privacy through a closing door. This innovative design element sets these seats apart from older versions and offers passengers greater seclusion.

The entertainment screens on board are also impressive, with diagonal measurements reaching 19 inches across. This sizeable screen provides ample space for passengers to enjoy their favorite movies or TV shows during the flight.

Passengers seated in rows 1 and 9 of the Polaris Elevated cabins will have access to Studios, which offer even more personal space and amenities. These exclusive seats come with larger entertainment screens, measuring 27 inches diagonally, and additional soft amenities for a truly luxurious experience.

United's Polaris business class offers an extensive range of amenities beyond the upgraded seating. Passengers can expect high-quality products from renowned brands such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Brooks Brothers, including pillows, bedding, and amenity kits.

Those booking the Elevated Polaris Studios" on new Dreamliners will receive a range of exclusive benefits. These include access to Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé Champagne, caviar amuse-bouche, higher-quality pajamas with a hoodie, and special Perricone MD Plasma+ amenity kits.

United's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners are gradually being equipped with the next-generation Polaris Elevated suite-style seats. These aircraft will operate on various routes, including from San Francisco to Heathrow Airport in London and Singapore Changi International Airport.

United's new 787-9 aircraft will be used on various routes, but passengers should check their specific flights as these can change. The airline has made it easier to view seat maps when searching for flights, allowing customers to see which type of Polaris seat is available.

However, just because a flight operates on one of the routes where the 787-9s are deployed does not mean that all flights will have the new seats. United may operate multiple daily frequencies, and the number of aircraft equipped with the Polaris seats remains limited. This means there could be equipment swaps, further complicating matters for passengers.

Despite these complexities, checking seat maps before booking can help avoid confusion. Passengers who book on a Standard or Flexible ticket will have access to the upgraded seating, but those on lower-tier tickets may not be so fortunate.

United's Polaris concept was introduced nearly a decade ago and has since been rolled out across various routes. The airline has also developed a new family of premium lounges at its hubs, catering specifically to Polaris customers and passengers in certain partner airlines' premium cabins.

Currently, there are United Polaris Lounges located at O'Hare (ORD), George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Newark Liberty International (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD) airports. These lounges offer a range of amenities, including sophisticated living areas, buffets, restaurant-style dining rooms serving destination-specific cuisine, cocktail bars, quiet spaces, rest areas, and shower suites.

To access these exclusive lounges, passengers must be traveling on a Standard or Flexible United Polaris ticket, hold first-class tickets with certain partner airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss, or ANA, or be in business class with carriers like Air New Zealand, ANA, or ITA.

In addition to those already mentioned, passengers on Basic or Flex business-class tickets with Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines are also eligible for access to these exclusive lounges.

United Polaris passengers can also enjoy a dedicated arrivals lounge at Heathrow Airport, providing them with a seamless transition from flight to destination.
