Artificial Intelligence Technology Raises Concerns About Relying On It

The author expresses reservations about using artificial intelligence technology due to concerns it may hinder their ability to connect with students and create personalized content.

My friends use AI regularly, but I refuse to. I'm learning to keep my beliefs and opinions about it to myself.

A recent encounter with artificial intelligence (AI) technology left a lasting impression on me, highlighting my reservations about embracing this rapidly advancing field.

The experience began at a teacher training session two years ago, where I was introduced to various ways AI could streamline tasks and save time for educators like myself. While the potential benefits were undeniable, my initial reaction was far from positive when presented with an opportunity to use AI to design a lesson plan.

The ease with which AI generated a comprehensive lesson plan in mere seconds was indeed impressive, but it only served to reinforce my doubts about relying on technology to do the thinking for me. I couldn't shake off the feeling that without direct involvement, I would be unable to effectively teach and connect with my students.

I subsequently decided to test AI's capabilities by requesting a chore chart tailored to my 10-year-old son at the time. While the list provided was adequate, it lacked the personal touch and warmth that only comes from creating something oneself. The experience left me feeling unenthusiastic about incorporating AI into my daily life.

My reservations are in stark contrast to those of my close friends, who have become frequent users of AI technology. They enthusiastically share their experiences with using AI for tasks such as meal planning and scheduling, touting its benefits and efficiency. Their enthusiasm has almost made me feel like I'm missing out by not embracing AI myself, leaving me to wonder if I'm being too cautious in my approach.

Choosing to resist technological change can be a difficult decision, especially when everyone around you seems to be embracing it enthusiastically. While I'm not opposed to progress, I've decided that for now, I'll stick to my own approach and not use AI in my daily life.

The constant questioning about why I don't use AI has become uncomfortable for me. It's as if people expect me to explain myself every time they see me making a choice that diverges from the norm. I'm starting to feel like I'm being put on the spot, forced to justify my decision in a way that makes me feel awkward.

I've had instances where friends have used AI to help them with decisions, and it's been interesting to see how it can be beneficial. For example, one of my friends asked ChatGPT for advice on altering a photo she had taken of me with a haircut I was considering trying out. The AI suggested some changes that ultimately helped me avoid a potentially bad look.

While these experiences have given me insight into the potential uses of AI, they haven't been enough to convince me to start using it myself. I still prefer seeing my friends in their unfiltered, original state, with all their imperfections intact. There's something about the authentic version that I find more beautiful and endearing.

By being open about my preferences, I feel like I'm able to express my opinions without criticizing or judging those who choose to use AI. It's a delicate balance, but one that I think is important in maintaining relationships with friends who have different views on technology.

Being around friends who regularly use AI has been a valuable learning experience for me. It's taught me how to express my views on the technology in a way that doesn't lead to conflict or disagreements.

I've come to realize that just because I have strong opinions about AI, it doesn't mean I need to share them with others. For instance, when one of my friends asked ChatGPT for help with meal planning, I didn't feel compelled to lecture her on the potential risks of relying on artificial intelligence.

Instead, I chose to focus on listening to her enthusiasm and excitement about trying new recipes. By doing so, our conversation remained friendly and enjoyable, rather than becoming a debate about technology.

This approach has also helped me communicate my own reservations about AI in a more thoughtful and considerate way, taking into account the feelings of those around me.
