Woman dies after falling into an uncovered maintenance hole in New York City

A 56-year-old girl fell into an open maintenance hole on a busy New York City road and died, police and utility officers stated as they investigated the way it may have occurred.

The girl parked her Mercedes-Benz SUV proper subsequent to the maintenance hole close to the nook of Fifth Avenue and East 52nd Street in Midtown Manhattan Monday evening and fell in after exiting the automobile shortly earlier than 11:30 p.m., police stated. She was pronounced lifeless at an area hospital.

It wasn’t instantly clear why the hole was not lined.

The utility firm Con Edison stated it was investigating the accident.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole,” the corporate stated in an announcement. “Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, and safety remains our top priority.”

Relatives of the girl instructed WABC-TV that they have been shocked and saddened by her loss of life, and so they have been looking for extra data.

City police stated officers responding to a 911 name discovered the girl unresponsive on the backside of the hole. The metropolis’s chief health worker’s workplace will decide the reason for loss of life.
