The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has imposed a N500,000 penalty on any pupil driving recklessly inside and round its premises after finishing final examinations.
ESUT’s registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu, disclosed this on Thursday whereas addressing members of the college group.
Mr Ugwu mentioned that the measure was a part of efforts to curb accidents and shield lives, as a result of reckless driving by students who have fun the completion of their final examinations.
“The reckless driving has caused incessant injuries, and we urge students to leave quietly after writing their examinations. Any vehicle impounded over such an anomaly will pay a N500,000 penalty. The directive commences from July 31 and is being made to the notice of students who will complete their final examinations then,” he mentioned.
The registrar mentioned that the prohibition remained in drive in compliance with the decision of the Enugu State House of Assembly on such challenge.
“The directive has also been earlier conveyed by the state commissioner for education in a memo dated December 20, 2024 and addressed to the institution’s vice-chancellor.
“The university warns that it would not hesitate to take drastic actions against students violating the directive. Any vehicle impounded for reckless driving will not be released until the owner pays a penalty of N500,000.
“The student found culpable will face additional disciplinary sanctions in line with the institution’s regulations,” he mentioned.
Mr Ugwu mentioned that the directive mandated all deans, administrators and heads of departments to sensitise and warn their final-year students to adjust to the directive strictly.
He added, “The institution’s chief security officer and other law enforcement agencies are mandated to be vigilant and ensure that law and order are maintained throughout the university premises.
“Members of the university community are enjoined to be guided accordingly and comply fully with the directive. The university remains resolute in enforcing the ban, in ensuring the safety of lives and property on campus.”
