A Redditor has successfully used AI to get Nintendo Switch games running natively on an Apple TV 4K. This is just one example of individuals leveraging AI tools like Claude Code to recompile or clone software for other platforms.

The project, called TVPort, is a fork of the nxnative toolkit that uses a Mac to recompile Switch and Switch 2 games for the set-top box. According to its developer, who goes by the username u/FloatingFalafel, most games run smoothly on the Switch but some require adjustments before they will function properly on Apple TV.

The developer noted that textures are loaded into memory differently in some games, necessitating diagnosis and repair before the game can be played on the set-top box. To achieve this feat, the Redditor used Claude Opus 5.5 for the project.

TVPort offers several features beyond simply getting Switch games up and running on Apple TV. It also allows users to back up save files to either a Mac or iCloud, as well as choose between two target framerates: 30 fps and 60 fps. This level of customization is likely to be attractive to fans of the Switch who want to play their favorite titles on their big screen.

The use of AI tools like Claude Code for software recompilation has become increasingly common in recent weeks, with some individuals using these tools to create their own versions of subscription-based apps or decompile and recompile video games.

The Redditor behind the TVPort project has reported success in getting certain Nintendo Switch titles running natively on Apple TV, albeit with some limitations.

Super Mario Odyssey is said to be playable at 60 frames per second, although it does experience occasional stutters and audio issues around waterfalls. In contrast, Animal Crossing: New Horizons appears to be capped at 30 frames per second without any reported issues. This suggests that the project's success may vary depending on the specific game being ported.

Further testing has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is still not running smoothly on Apple TV, experiencing thermal throttling during tests. To overcome this issue, more work would be needed to rework the game's engine and address its performance constraints.

The TVPort repository does not include any copyrighted game files, meaning users must provide their own legally obtained copies from Switch cartridges if they wish to experiment with the project. This approach is consistent with open-source development practices that emphasize user contribution and community involvement.

The use of AI tools in decompiling and recompiling projects has sparked controversy in recent weeks, including the decision by a prominent website operator to shut down their platform due to "bad actors" exploiting these technologies for illicit purposes.

The Apple TV 4K has proven itself to be a capable gaming platform, despite its limitations in processing power. The console's age is almost 10 years old, and it was initially considered underpowered when it first hit the market.

Despite these drawbacks, the set-top box can still handle demanding tasks with ease.
