A new season of Medicare enrollments begins today, allowing individuals to choose between traditional Medicare and private Medicare Advantage plans until December 7.

The enrollment period coincides with growing concerns about healthcare costs, particularly for seniors who are struggling to cope with rising expenses amidst high inflation rates. The looming midterm elections have also brought attention to the cost-of-living issue, which voters consistently cite as a major concern.

During this enrollment period, individuals will be able to select from various Medicare plans, including traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, as well as prescription drug plans that are tailored to their specific needs.

The changes set to take effect in 2027 will significantly impact seniors' healthcare costs. The annual cost-of-living adjustment for older adults and people with disabilities has been announced, with a 3.6% increase translating to an additional $75 per month for nearly 72 million recipients of monthly Social Security benefits and around 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries.

As part of these changes, Medicare will introduce new limits on out-of-pocket expenses under Part D, while also ending temporary federal subsidies for Part D premiums. Furthermore, the government will initiate negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to regulate drug prices.

The Medicare Part D subsidy program is set to come to an end at year's end, marking a significant shift in how patients pay for their prescription medications.

As a result of this change, the cap on annual out-of-pocket expenses for Medicare Part D drugs will increase to $2,400, up from $2,100 in 2026. The standard deductible for these plans will also rise from $615 to $700.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has projected that most people will experience only modest price increases as a result of these changes. However, the impact may be more pronounced for some individuals who have previously relied on the subsidy program to offset their premiums.

New Medicare-negotiated prices are set to go into effect in 2027 for 15 medications, including treatments for weight loss and diabetes such as Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. These negotiated prices will be applied to a range of other prescription drugs as well.

Additionally, the list of medications covered by Medicare is expanding to include several new treatments next year, including Trelegy Ellipta, Xtandi, and Otezla.

As Medicare's new season begins, it is crucial for beneficiaries to carefully evaluate their options and choose the most suitable coverage for their needs.

President Donald Trump has made several promises to Medicare enrollees in recent weeks, including one-time payments to help with Part B premiums. These rebates aim to alleviate some of the financial burden on over 20 million Medicare recipients, although only about a third will be eligible for this assistance.

The administration's plan involves making $90 payments per person, which is expected to cost around $2 billion. However, it's worth noting that approximately 35 million Medicare Advantage enrollees and millions of other individuals with disabilities or low-income status are not eligible for these rebates.

Beneficiaries who qualify will receive a one-time payment, either directly deposited into their accounts or as a paper check from the Treasury Department later in October.
