iPhone Users Unable to Decline Incoming Calls due to Default Settings

Users may experience difficulty declining incoming calls when their iPhone is unlocked because the decline option does not appear on the screen.

A common phenomenon has been observed among iPhone users where they are unable to decline incoming calls due to the absence of a visible option on their screen. This situation often leads to frantic moments as individuals struggle to silence or answer the call.

The reason behind this issue lies in the iPhone's default settings, which change depending on whether the device is locked or unlocked. When an iPhone is locked, the incoming call screen displays a "slide to answer control, whereas when it's unlocked, users are presented with the option to either answer or decline the call.

The appearance of the decline option can also be influenced by the user's Incoming Calls setting. Depending on this setting, the Accept and Decline buttons may appear in a compact banner or across the entire screen, but both options will still be available. This is not a result of any accidental disablement of features, but rather the iPhone's standard operating procedure.

It's worth noting that users do have the option to adjust their Incoming Calls settings through the Settings app on their device. This allows them to customize how they receive and respond to incoming calls according to their preferences.

Users who struggle with the absence of a decline option can also take advantage of alternative methods to silence or decline calls. Pressing the side button twice quickly will send the caller straight to voicemail, while pressing either volume button will silence the ring without declining the call, regardless of whether the screen is locked or unlocked.

When rejecting a phone call on an iPhone, it's often clear that you're not interested in speaking with the caller at that moment. However, there are ways to communicate your intentions without making it seem like you're being rude.

If you've rejected a call and want to let the caller know why, you can send them a message through the Messages app. This option is available when you reject a call by hitting the side button twice quickly while the iPhone is ringing.

When an incoming call appears as a banner on your screen, you can tap it to reveal more options. One of these options is the Message choice, which allows you to send a text response instead of answering the call.

You have several pre-set message options to choose from, or you can create a custom message that better suits your situation. This way, you can provide context for the caller and explain why they're being sent straight to voicemail.

It's worth noting that these pre-set messages can be edited in advance to suit your preferences. To do this, go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Respond with Text, where you can select a response and make any necessary changes.

For example, you might choose the message I'm working right now" or "Please text me; I'm busy." These short messages convey a lot of information about your current situation.

When it comes to managing incoming calls on your iPhone, you have various settings at your disposal to tailor your experience. To screen unknown callers, navigate to Settings > Apps > Phone and look for the Screen Unknown Callers option, available in iOS 26 and later.

By selecting this feature, you can choose how to handle unknown numbers - either never blocking them, asking for a reason before answering, or silencing them altogether. If you opt for silence, all unknown calls will go directly to voicemail without even ringing your phone, which may not be ideal in situations where the caller is someone you need to reach urgently.
