University of New South Wales (UNSW) Scientia Professor Martin Green has been awarded China’s most prestigious science award for his contribution to photo voltaic power analysis and improvement of the nation’s photo voltaic business.

The founding director of the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics (ACAP) and high-efficiency silicon photo voltaic cell pioneer, was offered with the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award on the 2026 National Science and Technology Awards Conference in Beijing.

The award is the highest accolade reserved for overseas scientists, engineers or organisations which have made excellent contributions to China’s scientific and technological improvement.

Green’s longstanding collaboration with Chinese researchers and business, and his position in mentoring generations of photovoltaic scientists and engineers, additionally cemented the award in his favour.

“Science knows no borders and green energy is a shared cause for all of humanity,” Green stated.

“Receiving this prestigious award is not just a personal honour, but a testament to over 40 years of win-win collaboration between UNSW Sydney and China’s academic and industrial sectors.”

A UNSW assertion additionally cited Green as reflecting on the significance of worldwide scientific partnerships to handle shared challenges.

“In facing the global challenge of climate change, cross-border scientific cooperation is more vital now than ever before,” Green stated.

Green performed a pivotal position in the early improvement and exponential progress of China’s photo voltaic business, which adopted improvements developed at UNSW and scaled by Chinese producers, serving to drive down the price of photo voltaic cells and speed up their world uptake.

Green arrange Australia’s first photo voltaic analysis lab in 1974 and established the world’s first photo voltaic undergraduate diploma in 2000.
