(NCS) — Opening statements started Monday in the triple-murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mom who has argued she isn’t criminally chargeable for fatally strangling her three younger youngsters.

The 35 yr outdated is charged with three counts of homicide and faces life in jail if convicted. Her lawyer has argued she was affected by postpartum psychosis and excessive psychological sickness when she killed them in 2023.

Prosecutors called Patrick Clancy as their first witness. He is the defendant’s ex-husband and the daddy of the slain youngsters: Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan.

Patrick Clancy testified he was in the basement working when he bought a textual content from his then-wife, who was upstairs with their three youngsters on January 24, 2023.

She recommended they get takeout as she hadn’t cooked something, Patrick testified. Lindsay recommended they order from a restaurant, and the 2 exchanged a number of extra texts about their son Callan’s nap that day and what meals they needed.

Lindsay positioned the order and Clancy got here upstairs, he mentioned.

“I took Callan for a minute and I rocked him by my knees, kissed Cora on the head and said, ‘be right back,’” he mentioned, including Dawson was consuming rooster nuggets on the sofa.

As he left, Lindsay was standing with Callan in the doorway of the lounge, close to the basement door, Patrick mentioned, describing her demeanor as “normal.”

Linsday strangled her youngsters in the basement whereas Patrick was out of the home. She then minimize her wrists and neck and jumped from a second-story window in a suicide try, leaving her partially paralyzed.

Her lawyer argues Lindsay was affected by postpartum psychosis and excessive psychological sickness, so she was not chargeable for her actions.

Judge William F. Sullivan recessed court docket for the day simply after 3 p.m. ET, with Patrick Clancy nonetheless on the stand.

The court docket won’t be in session Tuesday. Patrick Clancy will resume his testimony when court docket reconvenes on Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET.
