Search and rescue operations are underway in the Black Sea after a chemical tanker caught fire overnight to Thursday, leaving seven crew members missing. The Romanian authorities are scrambling to locate the missing sailors as they continue their search efforts.

A second chemical tanker was also set ablaze in the same region hours earlier but all its crew has reportedly been accounted for and is safe. Details about the cause of the fires are still emerging, with some speculation that Russian drones may have strayed into Romanian airspace.

While Romanian officials have not explicitly confirmed the connection between the drone strikes and the fires, there have been a string of attacks on cargo ships in recent days. At least five vessels off the coasts of Romania and neighboring Bulgaria have come under attack from drones over the past 10 days.

The incidents have resulted in significant losses with at least 23 sailors reported missing or dead. Romanian President Nicusor Dan has met with NATO chief Mark Rutte to address the situation, which he describes as unacceptable.

The situation is being closely monitored by NATO, which has pledged to continue working with Romania and other allies in the Black Sea region.

Both ships caught fire near the mouth of the Sulina Canal, a key waterway connecting the Danube River to the Black Sea, while anchored out of the canal.

Romania's naval authority launched its search and rescue operation after receiving an emergency alert from the San Marino-flagged tanker Wine Trader, which reported that five crew members were safe but seven were missing.

The Defense Minister has confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fires, including whether one of the ships was struck by a drone.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to an increase in Ukrainian ships using Romania's ports and navigating through its waters.

This shift is due to Ukraine's Black Sea ports being targeted by Russian forces, forcing vessels to seek alternative routes.

Shipping in the Black Sea has faced numerous attacks in recent months, significantly impacting grain transportation from both Ukraine and Russia, which are major cereal exporters.

As a result, Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced that the EU will discuss implementing a moratorium on civilian ship attacks during its ongoing summit in Brussels.

Bulgaria has taken diplomatic action by summoning the Russian ambassador following the sinking of a ship off its coast after it was hit by a drone attack.

The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of shipping in the region, with many vessels choosing routes closer to Romania's and Bulgaria's coasts.

The EU's proposed moratorium aims to protect civilian ships from further attacks, which could have far-reaching consequences for global food supplies.
