Mind in Motion is hosted by First Star ASU Academy, a nationwide nonprofit serving highschool college students impacted by foster care, incarcerated mother and father and homelessness. 

It grew out of a shared imaginative and prescient between Aryza Olague, program coordinator for First Star ASU Academy, and Jessica Verpeut, an assistant professor in ASU’s Department of Psychology and one of many program’s organizers.

The pair wished to create significant STEM alternatives for college students who are sometimes ignored.

For Olague, it was a pure match.

“(Verpeut) had a passion for serving youth and I had young people who needed to be served,” Olague stated.

The inaugural program launched college students to neuroscience by means of microscopy labs and EEG demonstrations whereas exploring astrophysics by means of interactive classes on exoplanets, asteroids and planetary science.

Dreams can come true

McKenna’s change in outlook wasn’t uncommon amongst college students in this system, Verpeut stated.
“They came in very hesitant, very quiet, scared,” she stated. “They really opened up over the past couple days. You just see a different personality, a different side of them.”

For Triston Larkin, the First Star ASU Academy has already modified the course of his life.

An Obama Scholar and Nina Pulliam Scholar, he’ll start courses at ASU this fall, majoring in biomedical sciences with a minor in psychology. His purpose is to turn into a doctor.

“The program has definitely helped me see my potential and see what is out there for people like me,” he stated.

Although he at all times wished to attend school, Larkin fearful about paying for it.

“First Star helped me see beyond that. They showed me that going to university was very important and very possible.”

He credit this system with giving him confidence.

“Being in a research university environment made me feel like — this is who I am. This is where I belong.”
