Argentina is set to become the first country in South America to introduce a golden passport program by the end of this year, offering Americans a new option for dual citizenship on the continent.

A golden passport scheme grants individuals or families citizenship in exchange for significant investments in specific economic sectors, and Argentina's program is likely to be one of the most popular options due to its proximity to the United States, strong economy, and powerful passport.

The country recently announced its investment requirements and application process details, with applications expected to begin by the fourth quarter of 2026. This move comes as part of a broader trend where individuals are building international portfolios of residence rights, citizenships, and investments across multiple countries worldwide.

According to Dominic Volek, group head of private clients at Henley & Partners, the program will provide investors with a notable new option for considering citizenship planning, taking into account Argentina's regional, economic, and lifestyle attributes as one of Latin America's largest economies.

Argentina's citizenship by investment program has been gaining attention from international investors, particularly those who already have a diverse portfolio of assets across multiple jurisdictions.

These individuals often have complex financial situations, with lives and businesses spread across different countries, and are seeking greater flexibility in managing their global interests.

According to industry experts, the new program will provide a valuable option for these investors, allowing them to consider citizenship planning as part of their overall strategy.

The government has outlined two paths for applicants to follow: making a treasury contribution or subscribing to a bond.

Background checks and application screening are also being standardized, with specific guidelines established for what types of checks will be required and which government agencies should be involved in the process.

This streamlined approach is expected to make it easier for qualified investors to navigate the application process and ultimately secure Argentine citizenship.

The new program is set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, pending its operational readiness.

Argentina's new citizen by investment scheme is expected to offer a range of benefits for travelers, including streamlined access to popular international destinations.

The country's passport currently ranks 16th in the world, providing visa-free travel to 114 countries according to Passport Index, and this will be a major draw for investors and global citizens.

Argentina's geographical proximity to the United States is likely to make its program appealing to those who want flexibility without having to relocate entirely, says Armand Arton, CEO of Arton Capital and founder of Passport Index.

Travelers with an Argentine passport also enjoy free movement within South American countries that are part of the Mercosur bloc, including Uruguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru.

The proposed Argentine golden passport program is set to offer streamlined processing times, potentially rivalling those of established Caribbean programs such as Saint Lucia, Grenada, and Antigua and Barbuda.

At this stage, all details are subject to change until the official launch of the program, which has not been confirmed yet. Travelers will need to wait for further announcements to understand the full scope of the scheme.

Two investment pathways have been unveiled by Argentine officials: a direct treasury contribution or an $800,000 USD subscription to a new government bond created specifically for this purpose. The first option involves paying $350,000 USD per applicant, with higher amounts required for additional family members.

For example, a family of four is expected to contribute around $500,000 USD in total, according to AMIGO. This structure aims to support Argentina's financial goals while offering different investment options for various types of investors.

The application process for Argentina's golden passport will involve thorough background checks to ensure financial transparency and due diligence. These checks will scrutinize applicants' identity, source of funds, finances, assets, jurisdictional risk, as well as their criminal, reputational, and immigration history.

The Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programs will coordinate with several government bodies, including Argentina's State Intelligence Secretariat, Financial Information Unit, and Ministry of Security, to conduct these background checks. The agency will also consult international intelligence agencies to verify the information.
