Americans' Location Choices Affect Financial Needs in Retirement

A real estate professional's life-changing decision to move to Mexico was influenced by impending caregiving responsibilities for her former partner.

I didn’t move to Mexico to save money. I moved to buy back my future

A sudden realization while driving through California sparked a life-changing decision for me - to move to Mexico and establish a home base in Puerto Vallarta. This coastal city had already captivated me during numerous visits spanning nearly 25 years.

My decision was influenced by the impending caregiving challenge I foresaw, as my former partner of 38 years, whom we affectionately called Sandy, was experiencing dementia-related symptoms. Despite no longer being a couple, Sandy and I shared a daughter and maintained a strong family bond.

As a seasoned real estate professional with over three decades of experience in California, I had insights into both sides of the transaction - buying and selling properties. My portfolio includes rental properties and other investments, as well as ongoing holdings in Sonoma County, California, and Texas.

The conventional wisdom is that Americans should focus on saving enough for retirement, but what about the impact of location on our financial needs? Where we live can significantly influence healthcare access and community building opportunities.

I thought I was preparing for a future caregiving role, but little did I know how swiftly this responsibility would become my reality.

The move to Puerto Vallarta was not about cutting costs or downsizing my lifestyle, it was about gaining control over my future and creating a better quality of life for myself and those I care about.

In fact, despite renting a modest apartment in San Francisco for $3,800 a month, I found that a much larger four-bedroom home with a pool in Puerto Vallarta could be had for approximately the same price. This was a welcome surprise, but it wasn't the main reason for my move.

As a real estate professional, I have to disclose that my work continues unabated in both California and Puerto Vallarta. In fact, relocating or purchasing property through me may even benefit professionally. But this is not what drives my daily decisions.

Meanwhile, bringing Sandy to Puerto Vallarta proved to be the right decision for his health and well-being. We arranged a neurologist appointment just 10 days after his arrival, which cost approximately $60, and an MRI that came in at about $300.

We settled into a routine of walking to shops and the beach, attending social gatherings and participating in community activities. Sandy even started taking yoga classes and making new friends, but things took a turn for the worse when he became disoriented while out alone one evening.

Sandy's medical condition took a turn for the worse after emergency surgery to remove an obstruction caused by a previously implanted device. The complications were severe enough that he required three days of care in a private hospital, adding to his already substantial medical expenses.

The cost of Sandy's treatment continued to mount as we arranged for round-the-clock nursing and care at home. A hospital bed was brought in, and nurses attended to his needs while his family members spent time with him. The expenses were significant, with nursing assistance alone totaling around $7,000 over the course of eight days.

The medical bills kept piling up, with physician visits and medication for pain management adding another $1,000 to the total. In all, we incurred approximately $16,000 in medical and nursing expenses, a substantial amount that would be challenging for many families to afford.

As Sandy's condition worsened, our family rallied around him. His sister and daughter traveled from Madrid to be by his side, with his daughter arriving two days before he passed away. The bedside vigil was intense, with nurses attending to his needs while family members spent quality time together.

The anesthesiologist visited regularly to help manage Sandy's pain, ensuring that his final hours were as comfortable as possible. His daughter slept in the room where his hospital bed stood and was beside him when his breathing changed early one morning, marking a poignant end to his life.

The emotional toll of watching a loved one decline was compounded by the need to manage every aspect of their care ourselves. However, thanks to the support system in place, we were able to focus on being family rather than navigating complex healthcare logistics.

My decision to establish a home in Mexico was motivated by the desire for more autonomy and flexibility as I age. Little did I know that this move would also become the backdrop for a poignant goodbye.

While living abroad can offer many benefits, it's essential to acknowledge that it doesn't eliminate medical or financial risks. In fact, accessing quality care can be a significant challenge, especially when navigating unfamiliar systems.

As a precautionary measure, I've maintained separate health insurance policies, including Kaiser Permanente Medicare Advantage coverage for my time in California and international health insurance through VUMI. However, these policies come with limitations, and it's crucial to carefully review residency requirements and emergency coverage.

The uncertainty surrounding medical expenses is still a pressing concern, as Sandy's costs remain pending reimbursement from Kaiser. This experience serves as a stark reminder that anyone contemplating retirement abroad must thoroughly investigate their insurance options, emergency arrangements, and financial preparedness before making the move.

Living abroad can provide a more affordable lifestyle, but it's essential to consider the implications of illness or emergencies on one's well-being.

Having access to quality medical care and emergency services was crucial during Sandy's illness, allowing for timely consultations with specialists, arrangements for nursing support, and even bringing hospital-grade equipment into their home. This experience underscores the importance of having a safety net in place when living abroad.

Ultimately, geographical location does not shield individuals from life's uncertainties, but it can significantly impact the resources and support available during challenging times.
