Samson emphasised the significance of early publicity to science, noting that the talents gained from competitions just like the PNSO may be utilized throughout numerous scientific disciplines.
“This is an excellent avenue for students to explore and pursue nuclear science and technology at an early stage, as we continue to strengthen nuclear science education in support of the country’s future,” she mentioned.
Champions’ row
High faculty college students from throughout the nation competed in the ultimate spherical held on 22 April 2026, with high performers rising from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) system.
1st Place – Ivan Gerard S. Empizo (PSHS-CAR)
2nd Place – Clara S. Canta (PSHS-Eastern Visayas)
third Place – Francis Ian Oliver P. Corachea (PSHS-CALABARZON)
4th Place – Magnus Rex C. Navarro (PSHS-Main)
fifth Place – Lorenzo S. Mercado (PSHS-Central Luzon)
The high 5 will type the Philippine delegation to the third International Nuclear Science Olympiad, with the fifth placer serving as reserve.
Empizo, the highest scorer, inspired fellow college students to consider in their skills.
“In a surprising turn of events, I found myself at the top of the leaderboard, a testament to the power of believing in oneself. I encourage everyone, especially the Grade 10 and Grade 11 students, to always trust in your abilities, despite any doubts or challenges you may face,” he mentioned.
Rigorous choice
The competitors started with elimination rounds on 7 March held concurrently on the Philippine Science High School-Main Campus in Quezon City and the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology.
A complete of 81 contestants had been narrowed down to twenty finalists, who underwent a Nuclear Science Training Program earlier than advancing to the ultimate spherical.
Participants tackled advanced subjects, together with atomic construction, radioactivity, nuclear fission and fusion, radiation security, and functions in power, well being, agriculture, and the setting.
The last spherical featured a five-hour examination designed to check mastery of nuclear science ideas.
Winners will obtain money prizes starting from P10,000 to P30,000 and can endure additional coaching below DOST-PNRI scientists in preparation for the worldwide competitors.
