The White House stated Sunday it would be “beautiful” if the Washington Commanders NFL team named their deliberate stadium within the nation’s capital after President Donald Trump.
That assertion comes after ESPN reported that there have been backchannel talks between the White House and the Washington Commanders possession group wherein Trump expressed curiosity in having the stadium named after him.
“That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt informed NCS in an announcement.
The Washington Commanders didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.
The Commanders have performed at Northwest Stadium, previously generally known as FedEx Field, in Landover, Maryland, since 1997. The franchise beforehand performed Washington, DC, at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, generally generally known as RFK Stadium, from 1961 till 1996.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser introduced an settlement to convey the Commanders again to Washington on the web site of the previous RFK Stadium in April. The DC Council approved that deal in September, months after Trump threatened to thwart that effort if the group didn’t change its name again to the “Redskins.” The group dropped the “Redskins” name in 2020 after decades of criticism from Native American teams that stated it was an ethnic slur and a derogatory reference to pores and skin coloration.
Josh Harris, who leads the Commanders’ possession group, has stated the group is focusing on a 2030 opening date for the stadium.
NCS has reached out to Bowser’s workplace for remark.
The president is predicted to attend the Commanders sport in opposition to the Detroit Lions at Northwest Stadium on Sunday.
Trump’s attendance at sporting occasions has been a typical theme of his second time period in workplace. So far this yr, he has attended an Ultimate Fighting Championship occasion, the annual Army-Navy school soccer sport, the Ryder Cup golf match and the US Open males’s tennis closing at Arther Ashe Stadium.
