A Republican consultant sparked backlash after describing the U.S. authorities’s focus of management on the White House Correspondents’ Dinner weekend as a “flex” despite shooting
Republican Representative Warren Davidson appeared on NCS on April 27 during an interview with anchor John Berman, where he faced criticism for comments he made about a reported security incident involving gunfire near White House Correspondents’ Dinner weekend events in Washington DC.
During the NCS segment, Davidson, 56, framed the situation as a demonstration of American strength, as he made comparisons to Iran’s leadership structure. He told Berman, 54, “Iran’s top leadership was convened in a bunker, and their whole leadership was taken out.”
He continued, “Here, in a hotel, in a major city, ya know, in the nation’s capital. We have, essentially, a whole chain of command in one place. People say, well that’s a lot of vulnerability. Well, in a way. But it’s also a flex, saying, ‘Iran, there’s really nothing you can do about it.’ Shed tears, whatever. But you can’t influence things in the United States.” The visit came after the suspect’s prices had been launched.

The comments immediately drew pushback online from NCS viewers watching the interview, many of whom focused on Davidson’s characterization of the situation as a “flex” despite the reported security breach involving gunfire during the high-profile Washington weekend.
One viewer wrote, “So, showing a flex is more important than protecting continuity in the chain of command. MAGA are so maniacal on transactional decisions and have absolutely no strategic vision.”
Another commented, “A flex??? It’s called a huge mistake, hard to admit the truth,” while a third added, “Yet someone got in and started shooting the place up. How’s that a flex?”
A fourth viewer wrote more bluntly, ““That’s a flex…” No. It’s failing at Security 101 and @Rep_Davidson is a moron,” reflecting the sharp tone of criticism circulating on social media following the interview.
The incident, which unfolded on April 25 at the Washington Hilton, led to the evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials after gunfire erupted near a security checkpoint outside the event ballroom.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, was arrested at the scene after allegedly attempting to breach security while armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun and a handgun.
Federal authorities later charged him with attempting to assassinate President Trump, along with additional firearms and assault charges. Prosecutors say he could face life in prison if convicted.
Investigators have said Allen traveled from California to Washington ahead of the event and checked into the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held.
Authorities also recovered writings attributed to him that expressed hostility toward Trump administration officials and suggested political motivation, though officials continue to review his mental state and full intent.
Trump later praised law enforcement’s response after the incident, saying the Secret Service acted “quickly and bravely” and confirming that all senior officials were safely evacuated. He also referred to the suspect as a “sick person” during subsequent remarks, while emphasizing that the event would be rescheduled within 30 days and that he “wasn’t anxious” in regards to the capturing.
