City staff open a time capsule buried in 2010 by the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame on March 26, 2026, at Laredo International Airport as officers and group members look on.

As crew members lifted the quilt of the metallic canister, metropolis leaders and members of the corridor of fame watched in awe and nostalgia. Mayor Victor D. Trevino took the honors of retrieving objects positioned inside by 30-40 organizations and residents.

The capsule contained CDs from the 2009 Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame; a basketball lined in signatures from the Martin High School Tigers; an E.T. plush; memorabilia from Laredo Heat, Laredo College and Texas A&M International University; medical pamphlets from Laredo Medical Center; a crystaline dice in recognition of Mercy Ministries of Laredo; and components of a bobblehead of Richard “Heatwave” Berler, which was later pieced collectively. Other objects included signatures from corridor of fame inductees and a Babe Ruth pin preserved in plastic wrap, reportedly contributed by his granddaughter.
According to town, all objects positioned in the capsule will likely be returned to their authentic house owners. One proprietor of the objects had the chance to open the contents of his contribution alongside members of the group.
Jose Garcia, a historian with the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame, opened the letter and memorabilia he positioned in the canister: By George magazines he contributed to, letters to his household, a photograph of his spouse Yolanda and their kids, Kristela and Damian Garcia, and an unopened bottle of wine.
“I was very pleased and surprised I’m here to see them,” the 70-year-old stated. “I’m appreciative.”

Also included have been renderings of plans for the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame museum, which has but to return to fruition in town.
He stated seeing memorabilia from native colleges, hospitals, committees, organizations and nonprofits gave him a way of nostalgia. He added that seeing something related to the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame made him really feel as if former members have been there alongside him.
“It was like I was with the former members. I felt a presence,” he stated. “When we did this, it was an idea of: What are we going to do in the future?”
The time capsule was created beneath founder Guadalupe “Pitin” Guajardo and constitution members Andres “Andy” Ramos Jr., Peter Lizcano and Eduardo “Lalo” Cavazos, made doable by a grant from International Bank of Commerce, Commerce Bank and Texas Community Bank in 2010.

Trevino stated the capsule, though it held objects from a less complicated time, displays the group and exhibits how a lot town has grown alongside the historic influence of sports activities in the Latino group.
