MABANK, Texas (KTVT) – A Texas lady shared video of a 76-year-old veteran delivering her DoorDash order, sparking a flood of help for the person who was forced out of retirement to assist along with his household’s health care costs.
Savannah Saulters lives in Mabank, Texas. On March 14, she seen the person who dropped off her DoorDash order was an older man carrying a veteran’s cap. He was solely on digital camera for a number of seconds, but it surely made a definite impression on her.
“There should be no reason that a 76-year-old man is delivering my pizza at 10:30 at nighttime. That should not be happening,” Saulters mentioned.
After asking social media for assist, she rapidly realized the meals supply driver was Larry Phillip Colvin, a Vietnam veteran who’s been forced again into the working world after 10 years of retirement as a repairman.
“My Social Security just wasn’t cutting it anymore,” Larry Colvin mentioned. “I had to do something, and I can’t hold down a regular job.”
The veteran, who will probably be 77 in May, started delivering meals as a result of the costs of health care for his spouse and son had been greater than his month-to-month earnings. He says he works each night time of the week, besides Wednesday when he attends church.
“My wife is looking at a couple surgeries. My son has three autoimmune diseases, lupus and dystonia,” Larry Colvin mentioned. “I wish I didn’t have to do it at night because that’s when you make the money.”
The veteran’s daughter-in-law, Donna Colvin, says the work is tough on him.
“I think it’s very hard on him. I think he’s almost 77 years old, and it’s gotta take a toll somewhere,” she mentioned.
After listening to Larry Colvin’s story, Saulters started a GoFundMe for his household that can hopefully assist him put the brakes on his job as a supply driver. More than $16,000 had been raised by early Tuesday.
The veteran’s household says the gesture has already helped them “tremendously.”
“I say, ‘God bless that lady,’” Larry Colvin mentioned. “I’m very grateful. It’ll help pay off some bills.”
