A small plane crashed in Kenya’s coastal area of Kwale early Tuesday whereas en path to Maasai Mara National Reserve, with 12 people feared dead, officers stated.

The crash occurred in a hilly and forested space about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Diani airstrip, authorities stated. Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde advised The Associated Press that the passengers have been “all foreign tourists” and their nationalities could be confirmed later.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority stated that 12 people have been onboard the Cessna Caravan-type plane, and authorities have been investigating the reason for the crash. The breakdown of what number of have been passengers and crew wasn’t instantly clear

The plane crashed minutes after takeoff and burst into flames leaving a charred wreckage on the scene, officers stated.

Witnesses advised the AP that they heard a loud bang, and on arriving on the scene they discovered unrecognizable human stays.

The airline, Mombasa Air Safari, advised the AP that it was collaborating with the civil aviation physique and updates on the crash could be shared although the authority.
