The Science and Technology Building, one of many University of South Florida St. Petersburg’s lab and educating areas, first opened in 2009. Despite the brand new development at the moment, it’s already had upkeep points.
“The roof was a problem from day one,” mentioned Dr. Henry Alegria, the affiliate chair of the college’s chemistry division.
Dr. Ana Hoare, the educating lab supervisor of chemistry, additionally skilled points with the roof of the constructing. She informed The Crow’s Nest that the roof leaked in a number of locations, and water would acquire after it rained and would start leaking into the labs.
“It became really chronic whenever we had our summer storms, because then you would have a deluge come down every couple of days,” Hoare mentioned.
The points have been ultimately fastened, however Hurricanes Helene and Milton introduced a brand new set of issues together with the destruction left of their wake.
Most outstanding issues included the roofing, water gathering and leaking from the fume hoods, strain imbalances inflicting doorways to get caught and giant fluctuations within the constructing’s temperature.
“We would have periods in the labs where it would get super hot. And then there were other periods of time when it was so frigid that I and my staff had to wear base layers under our clothes to work,” Hoare mentioned.
Following the autumn 2024 semester, the division agreed on a plan to have the repairs happen over the winter break. Come spring of 2025, the problems have been higher, however nonetheless obvious.
“We’d report the problems and be told ‘Oh, next week, then month,’ so we would do one week online and thinking were coming in person again, just for them to do give an update and ‘Well, not really,’ and go online again,” Alegria mentioned.
Hoare echoed Alegria’s frustrations with the mix-ups and false guarantees of the timeline of the repairs. At the tip of the spring semester, the choice was made to utterly shut STG over the summer time.
“That job was supposed to have been completed in July. And then it was August. And then the next month and then the next month,” Alegria mentioned.
Part of the issue was present in having completely different contractors for various components of the constructing, reminiscent of software program, roofing and plumbing — and that created a whole lot of scheduling points.
STG didn’t absolutely reopen till Nov. 2025. Until that time, labs have been absolutely on-line or within the Warehouse Lab when doable.
“The frustration is that lab classes are supposed to give students a hands-on experience, not a virtual one,” Alegria mentioned.
Both Alegria and Hoare have been upset that they have been unable to present a correct lab expertise for his or her college students.
The restricted choices and the back-and-forth standing of STG annoyed a whole lot of college students who frequent the constructing. Delainey Beams, a sophomore biology main, was one such pupil.
“There was really only one true lab [last semester]. The others previous to that were like, ‘Oh, just make a periodic table,’ and I felt like I wasn’t actually doing chemistry,” Beams mentioned.
Beams mentioned that she didn’t thoughts the lessons being on-line, however very like her professors, would have appreciated to have extra discover in regards to the location of her lessons, in addition to the speed that was paid for the programs.
“If you’re having all of these maintenance issues and you’re charging people who are possibly on financial aid and are paying money to get an in-person lab and have the experience and then they’re getting 75% of their semester online,” Beams mentioned. “It’s just disappointing because there are people who genuinely do enjoy going to the lab, putting on their lab coat and doing experiments. No one wants to have to click through a laggy simulation.”
Haley Beggs, a sophomore majoring in biology, additionally mentioned that college students have been unable to drop one of many semester’s labs. In every lab class, college students get to choose one lab session and linked assignments to exempt themselves from.
“I was going to use my drop to leave early for Thanksgiving, which was the second in person lab that semester. They were like, ‘No, you can’t use that,’ so I had to speak to Dr. Alegria and the [chemistry department] because I couldn’t change my flight,” Beggs mentioned.
Beggs was grateful that the professors allowed her to use that drop however expressed her frustrations within the timing of the discover for the lab drops.
Hoare estimated that the constructing is about 75% open and is hopeful that all the repairs shall be absolutely accomplished quickly.
