A Pilot Plant for the manufacture of Nd-Fe-B (Neodymium-Iron-Boron) uncommon earth everlasting magnets established at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad, an autonomous establishment of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
The pilot-plant was inaugurated by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST, with Dr. R. Vijay, Director, ARCI in the august presence of Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Former Secretary DST and Chairman, Governing Council, ARCI; Dr. S. Ok. Jha, Former CMD, MIDHANI, Member-Technical Review Committee; Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, CEO, Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), a number of delegates with main participation from industries, nationwide institutes and different stakeholders.
The facility established at ARCI adopts an end-to-end strategy, masking the course of from strip-cast alloy to completed sintered magnets, enabling the improvement of a sturdy and self-reliant manufacturing ecosystem.
The pilot plant marks a major step in direction of attaining self-reliance in important supplies and strengthening India’s place in the international uncommon earth worth chain. Nd-Fe-B magnets are important elements in electrical autos, renewable power methods, electronics, and superior manufacturing applied sciences.

While inaugurating the pilot plant Prof. Karandikar highlighted this pilot plant is a crucial step in direction of constructing strategic autonomy in important supplies, notably in the context of international provide chain vulnerabilities and India’s rising demand in clear power and superior manufacturing sectors. “As we work towards Viksit Bharat 2047, addressing resource constraints and strengthening indigenous capabilities in critical technologies will be central to our development strategy. Initiatives like this help reduce dependence while enhancing resilience and competitiveness,” he added.
Prof. Karandikar stated that we’re constructing an enabling ecosystem—via institutional frameworks and mission-driven applications—to translate analysis into scalable innovation and we invite trade, startups and academia to associate in positioning India as a worldwide chief in rising applied sciences.
Rare earth magnet provide chains are presently extremely concentrated globally, creating vulnerabilities for rising economies. The institution of indigenous capabilities throughout the worth chain—from supplies to magnet manufacturing—will improve provide safety, value competitiveness, and technological management.
The pilot-scale plant will function a important platform for know-how validation and course of optimization, trade collaboration and demonstration, scaling up indigenous improvements to business manufacturing and supporting deep-tech startups and personal sector participation.

“The transition from research to manufacturing is what makes this pilot plant truly significant. Its flexibility will enable continuous innovation, process optimization, and product development,” Prof. Sharma famous.
Dr. Shivakumar Kalyanaraman, CEO, ANRF defined about Mission for Advancement in High-impact Areas (MAHA) initiatives for accelerating important applied sciences together with India’s EV ecosystem and invited personal sectors for energetic participation in translational analysis.
Dr. R. Vijay, Director, ARCI knowledgeable that ARCI is growing a whole ‘mineral-to-market’ ecosystem—from uncommon earth extraction to magnet manufacturing—strengthening analysis translation and and trade linkage.
The pilot plant is anticipated to catalyse trade participation, foster innovation, and assist commercialization of indigenous uncommon earth magnet applied sciences. It can even contribute to the development of the electrical mobility ecosystem and superior supplies manufacturing in India.

This initiative represents a key step in direction of attaining Atmanirbhar Bharat and realizing the imaginative and prescient of Viksit Bharat 2047.
