TOKYO — Japan’s schooling ministry says about 30% of personal universities in the nation may have severe monetary issues by 2040. This is as a result of the variety of 18-year-olds is falling, which means fewer college students will enter college.

In 2024, about 630,000 college students began college, however by 2040, that quantity may drop to 460,000. The greatest decline is anticipated between 2036 and 2040, when about 100,000 fewer college students are projected.


The ministry checked out 601 personal universities and located that the quantity at “particularly high” danger of economic trouble will rise from 22 in 2025 to 170 in 2040.
