LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo has introduced a new push to ban transgender athletes from competing in female sports across the state.
Lombardo, a Republican, joined a political motion committee (PAC) known as Protect Girls’ Sports, which filed an modification petition with the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office on Wednesday.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) voted last year to exclude transgender athletes from female sports.
This new initiative would amend the state’s equal rights modification to designate athletic participation at a state-funded establishment primarily based on intercourse assigned at beginning. It expressly forbids anybody assigned male at beginning from taking part in sports for women or girls.
The Protect Girls’ Sports PAC says the objective is to have the initiative seem on this yr’s basic election poll. If accredited, the initiative would seem once more in 2028, and if handed a second time, it might amend the structure.
Leaders of the initiative say they need to guarantee women and boys compete on a degree taking part in discipline in sports.
“We are taking thoughtful steps to ensure girls’ sports are fair and athletes are safe,” Lombardo stated in an announcement. “It’s important that female athletes have the opportunity to succeed in their athletic field. By bringing together a diverse coalition now, we can establish clear and fair standards that protect generations of female athletes to come.”
LGBT teams oppose bans on transgender women and girls competing in sports. The advocacy group GLAAD has known as it a “strategic culture war wedge issue” adopted by conservative teams and politicians.
Bans on trans athletes lead to extra harassment for women and girls in sports, invasive screenings and costly intercourse verification testing, and growing marginalization of the trans neighborhood, GLAAD argues.
