President Donald Trump could have sabotaged his personal approval rankings along with his “Liberation Day” tariffs, in accordance with NCS knowledge chief Harry Enten.

Trump imposed a 10% tariff on imports from most international locations greater than a 12 months in the past — a transfer met with widespread criticism from economists, consultants and Democrats. That determination could have additionally led to his low approval score amongst Americans, Enten mentioned on Tuesday.

“Just take the ‘L,’ man. Just take the ‘L,’” Enten mentioned on ”NCS News Central.” ”Tariffs were the biggest unforced political error that I can recall in a long period of time.”

He said the “turning point” for Trump’s approval rating was on “Liberation Day,” explaining that Trump has had a negative net approval rating in every poll since March 29, 2025.

“That means that Donald Trump, there hasn’t been a single poll that meets NCS standards for reporting in which he has had anything but a negative net approval rating for 389 days. As I said, ‘Dude, just take the L.’ Tariffs are a terrible political thing for you,” Enten said.

He said that Americans liked Trump’s stance on tariffs during his 2024 campaign, but did not like the tariffs once they were imposed. He said during the 2024 election, Trump was trusted more than former Vice President Kamala Harris on tariffs.

Trump has seen a 42-point swing on tariffs — from being trusted 12 points more than Harris during the campaign to now having a -30 net approval rating on the issue.

“He’s 48 points underwater with independents on tariffs. This is just a political disaster, and the longer he drags it out, the more and more it can hurt his political standing,” Enten added.

He also said that world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who stood up to Trump’s tariffs have a higher approval rating. Carney has a +24-point net approval rating, while Sheinbaum has a +41-point net approval rating.

“So the people who stood up to Trump on tariffs, those are the people who benefited versus Donald Trump. When he went up against these world leaders, well, he just went right straight into the political basement,” Enten said.
