Michael Kane, a 54-year-old retiree, has found himself missing a sense of purpose after moving to Koh Samui, Thailand over a year ago. He had grown tired of the fast-paced life in the US and was seeking a slower pace.
Kane's career trajectory spanned various industries, from restaurants and software to construction, real estate, sales, and marketing. His work experience began in Southern California, where he grew up, before he relocated to Atlanta in 1990. He spent nearly three decades living in Atlanta, until he started splitting his time between Thailand and the US.
A visit to Thailand a decade ago had left Kane enamored with the country's charm, prompting him to stay for an extended period of three months. The experience had been so enjoyable that he decided to divide his time between two countries. However, since moving abroad permanently, Kane has begun to feel a void in his life.
Kane's most recent business venture before leaving the US was a doggy day care outside Atlanta, which he had started after struggling to find a suitable facility for his own pet. The pandemic had coincidentally hit just as the business was about to open, allowing him to sell it and eventually make the decision to retire from running businesses in the US.
After years of working abroad, I had grown tired of the fast-paced lifestyle in the US and yearned for a slower pace of life.
My travels throughout my career had instilled in me an appreciation for diverse cultures, particularly Thai culture, which I felt drawn to.
In 2020, I made the decision to relocate to Koh Samui, a picturesque island in Thailand, where I could immerse myself in this captivating culture and enjoy a more relaxed way of life.
I settled into a two-bedroom apartment in Mae Nam, a northern area of the island, which cost $186,100.
Initially, I held a five-year Thailand Elite visa, but it has since undergone a rebranding to become known as the Thailand Privilege visa.
Two years later, when the Long-Term Resident Wealthy Pensioners visa was introduced by the Thai government in 2022, I opted to switch to this new program, which offers a 10-year validity period.
As I settled into my new life on Koh Samui, I sought out experiences that embodied the quintessential "retirement on a Thai island", spending time at the beach, indulging in regular massages, and savoring the freedom from work-related responsibilities.
As I settled into my new life on Koh Samui, I found myself seeking out entrepreneurial ventures to fill the void of purpose that had been left behind in my previous career. My girlfriend at the time, a personal trainer, was baking banana cakes in our kitchen and selling them around the island, which sparked an idea.
We decided to rent a small space and turn it into a business, setting up ovens and expanding her cake sales. The addition of a coffee shop also seemed like a natural fit, as we had struggled to find decent coffee on the island and thought it would complement the cakes well. This was the beginning of Izzy's Coffee.
The café started out as a small outdoor kiosk, costing around 100,000 Thai baht to build. We then invested an additional 400,000 Thai baht in equipment and furnishings. Having secured a work permit thanks to my Long-Term Resident visa, we were able to turn our idea into reality. My partner Yam and I now run the café together.
As the business grew, so did our vision for it. About six months ago, we decided to enclose the kiosk and transform it into a fully-fledged café. This change allowed us to provide a more comfortable experience for our customers, which is something I'm proud to be a part of every day, ensuring that each person who walks through the door has a perfect visit.
I developed all our drinks, from specialty coffee concoctions to creative flavor combinations.
Living in Thailand can come with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to navigating the legal system and affording a comfortable lifestyle.
Despite these hurdles, I've managed to build a fulfilling life here over the past year, and while there are certainly some drawbacks to being away from family and friends back home, technology has made staying in touch relatively easy.
My ex-wife and I have remained close even after our divorce, and she and her new husband have visited me in Thailand on several occasions. Her father, who's like a second dad to me, has also stopped by twice.
The café, which I've poured my heart and soul into, gives me a sense of purpose that retirement alone couldn't provide, but even this entrepreneurial endeavor is starting to feel stale now that it's running smoothly.
