Jaguar Land Rover's tumultuous launch of its all-electric vehicle design and advertising campaign has led to significant changes within the company. Jaguar's chief creative officer Gerry McGovern, a notable car designer who oversaw the polarizing new direction, is among those who have departed.

Managing Director Rawdon Glover has remained steadfast throughout this period of upheaval, despite the company selling no new cars for an extended time. He appears unwavering in his confidence that the finished version of the luxury four-door GT will ultimately resonate with consumers.

Jaguar finally unveiled the Type 01 at a New York City event on Tuesday, marking the culmination of its ambitious project. According to Jaguar's press materials, the Type 01 is a "bold grand tourer that never arrives unnoticed," evoking the spirit of classic Jaguars.

The production model retains many of the prototype's distinctive features, including its low roofline, short front overhangs, and extended rear, as well as oversized 23-inch wheels. The addition of extra doors has helped to ground the Type 01's design, shifting it away from a futuristic aesthetic reminiscent of sci-fi vehicles like Thunderbirds.

The production model's front end has been subtly refined, with a slightly softer nose that deviates from the prototype's more aggressive appearance. This adjustment is likely intended to make the car more approachable and less polarizing than its predecessor.

The rear of the Type 01 is where its exterior design truly comes alive, featuring full-width lights that remain hidden until illuminated by a horizontal strikethrough.

The car's specifications are nothing short of impressive, boasting up to 1,030 horsepower and 1,365 Newton-meters of torque, making it Jaguar's most powerful road vehicle yet.

A mere 2 seconds separate the Type 01 from reaching its top speed, while accelerating from 62 to 112 mph takes a further 4 seconds, a testament to its remarkable performance capabilities.

The tri-motor setup, comprising a 260-kilowatt front motor paired with twin 310-kilowatt rear motors, is responsible for the car's exceptional acceleration and responsiveness.

Its dimensions are substantial, measuring 5,235 mm in length and 1,403 mm in height, but all-wheel steering cleverly makes it feel more agile on the road.

The Type 01's interior design is a key aspect of its luxury credentials, featuring a panoramic glass roof with adjustable virtual blinds that allow natural light to flood in.

However, one notable absence from the rear of the car is a traditional windscreen, instead replaced by a digital "ClearSight rearview display embedded centrally in the full-width soundbar at the base of the windscreen. This display shows what's behind the vehicle, using footage from a rear-facing camera positioned at the same height as the door mirrors.

This clever design reduces the need for constant focal adjustments that can be annoying with traditional rearview systems. The driver is treated to an expansive view ahead, courtesy of a 24-inch OLED screen that extends towards the center of the car.

In addition to its digital displays, the Type 01 also boasts a range of comfort features, including hot stone massage effect" seats that are electrically adjustable in 12 different ways. The cabin air purification system removes allergens, toxins, and particulates from the air, while a fragrance diffuser offers a choice of scents.

The Type 01's practicality is also on display, with a generous luggage space of 450 liters expanding to 1,000 liters when the rear seats are folded. This reflects Jaguar's attention to detail in developing the car, which has seen over 150 prototypes built and driven more than 700,000 miles during its development process.

The Type 01's bodywork boasts an impressive feat of engineering: a single, unbroken panel that stretches over three meters from the A-pillar to the rear of the vehicle.

Jaguar's initial computer simulations indicated that pressing this massive panel with its five distinct angles would be impossible. However, after weeks of development and thousands of hours of work, the company successfully created this complex piece of bodywork.

The Type 01 is set to go on sale at a price point that could make or break Jaguar's chances in the luxury electric vehicle market. The starting price is around $170,000, which positions the car below competitors like Ferrari and Lamborghini, while still commanding a premium over mainstream models.

Jaguar believes it has identified a sweet spot in the market where buyers are willing to pay top dollar for electric vehicles that offer a balance between affordability and exclusivity. However, so far, no manufacturer has managed to crack this niche successfully, with Porsche, Lamborghini, Mercedes, and Bentley all struggling to make an impact.

Jaguar's approach to electric vehicles (EVs) is centered on redefining what an EV looks and feels like, rather than solely focusing on its propulsion method. The company aims to make the Type 01 an attractive option for a new audience, one that goes beyond traditional car enthusiasts.

To achieve this goal, Jaguar must distance itself from the typical EV tropes that have dominated the market so far. Instead of emphasizing the vehicle's electric powertrain, the brand wants to focus on its design, performance, and overall driving experience.

The Type 01 is being marketed as a unique offering in the EV space, one that appeals to a younger demographic often associated with luxury brands like Jaguar. The company's campaign features youthful characters, hinting at a shift towards a more modern and vibrant image.

Jaguar's target audience may not necessarily be the traditional car enthusiast, but rather someone who values style and performance above all else. However, this new approach also raises questions about whether the Type 01 will appeal to existing Jaguar owners, who have traditionally been associated with the brand's heritage and luxury credentials.

As Jaguar prepares to unveil the Type 01, it remains to be seen which audience will ultimately sign up for the vehicle. Will it be the youthful, tech-savvy individuals featured in the launch campaign, or will it be a more traditional demographic that has historically supported the brand?

Jaguar's entry into the electric vehicle market is being met with skepticism by some industry experts who view it as a commodity space. This means that potential buyers are primarily concerned with factors such as price, range, and features rather than brand heritage or prestige.

The company is taking a bold approach to differentiate itself from competitors by leveraging its rich history and cultural significance in China, where luxury brands like Bentley have found success. However, the Type 01's electric design may not be enough to evoke a strong sense of heritage, as it appears to be looking forward rather than backward in terms of innovation.

For Jaguar to consider its electrified rebirth a success, it needs to establish itself at a competitive price point and achieve significant sales volumes within two years. This would require the brand to become more current and culturally relevant, with customers genuinely interested in what the company will do next.
