Summary
Water is a elementary useful resource, as outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Yet, international water sources are dealing with vital challenges, together with in Africa, the place about 411 million individuals, virtually a 3rd of the continent’s 1.4 billion inhabitants, lacked entry to fundamental ingesting water in 2020.
Demand for freshwater is projected to exceed provide by 40 per cent by 2030, threatening the achievement of SDG 6 on clear water and sanitation for all, and different SDGs on meals safety, poverty, gender equality and peace.
Tackling water shortage because of extra demand and local weather change would require a dramatic enchancment in how Africa manages water sources. It can even require strategic planning, funding in resilient infrastructure, and insurance policies that combine local weather adaptation into water administration frameworks.
Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) may present options to make sure water safety, sanitation, and sustainable improvement. However, this calls for coordinated, evidence-based dialogue and motion.
In this context, the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), in collaboration with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) and companions, are convening a webinar on “Innovative Science and Technology Solutions for Water Security and Sanitation in Africa.”
The webinar aligns with the African Union’s 2026 theme: Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063. It additional aligns with the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 and particularly advances SDG 6, which goals to make sure the provision and sustainable administration of water and sanitation for all.
The webinar supplies a platform for policymakers, researchers, improvement practitioners, and companions to look at scalable science, know-how, and innovation options, share greatest practices, and discover enabling coverage and financing frameworks that may strengthen water safety and sanitation service supply throughout the continent.
The goals of the webinar are:
-
To contribute to a dynamic coverage atmosphere centered on scaling up Innovative Science and Technology Solutions for Water Security and Sanitation service supply in Africa for sustainable improvement.
-
To increase the notice of African policymakers and the United Nations System on the significance of evidence-based STI Policies, progressive options, and local weather motion for water safety, sanitation, and resilience.
-
To help the implementation of concrete, evidenced or science primarily based STI and Innovative options for Water Security and Sanitation in Africa.
As that is the primary key occasion on this significant matter in 2026, it units the tone for main milestones centred across the theme all through the remainder of this 12 months, together with the Africa Dialogue Series 2026, the twelfth Africa Forum for Sustainable Development (ARFSD-12), the Fourth Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference, the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the Second UN Water Conference.
The occasion is co-organized by the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), the OSAA Think Tank Network – African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE), and Cellule d’Analyse de Politiques Economiques du Cires (CAPEC).
