TEXMiN Foundation, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on Friday stated it has signed a pact with the University of Pretoria, South Africa, for research collaboration in the sector of critical minerals, uncommon earth factor processing, recycling, extraction applied sciences and superior mining innovation.

Under the partnership, the 2 institutions will collectively undertake research, expertise improvement and educational change programmes, and determine collaborative initiatives in sectors linked to lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, manganese, aluminium, copper, uncommon earth parts (REEs), battery supplies and different critical minerals.

The partnership goals to collectively discover and develop technological options throughout the mining worth chain whereas strengthening world cooperation in rising critical mineral ecosystems.

Technology Innovation in Exploration & Mining Foundation (TEXMiN) is an organization created beneath the aegis of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) programme by the Department of Science and Technology.

“TEXMiN Foundation, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and the University of Pretoria, South Africa, signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of research collaboration. The strategic collaboration brings together TEXMiN’s research and technology innovation expertise with the University of Pretoria’s academic and research advancements in mining, metallurgy, and engineering sciences,” an announcement by the Dhanbad-based basis stated.

Under the collaboration, each institutions will undertake joint research and expertise improvement programmes targeted on critical mineral focusing on, superior geophysical strategies, digital subsurface analytics, mineral processing, recycling programs, and mining innovation, the assertion stated.

The partnership can even embrace joint asset improvement, entry to services and infrastructure for stakeholders and research companions, implementation of collaborative programmes associated to critical minerals, and translational innovation initiatives aligned with evolving world mineral and power transition priorities.

The collaboration additionally opens alternatives for future Centre of Excellence (CoE)-led initiatives throughout each nations in superior research and improvement, skilling, and expertise translation.

Prof Sukumar Mishra, director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and chairman, Hub Governing Board, TEXMiN Foundation, stated the collaboration highlights the significance of worldwide cooperation in securing critical minerals and selling sustainable mining applied sciences.

“This partnership reflects the growing importance of international cooperation in securing the future of critical minerals and sustainable mining technologies. By bringing together complementary expertise from India and South Africa, we aim to create meaningful research outcomes, technology-led solutions, and knowledge-sharing platforms that can support industrial transformation and responsible resource development,” Mishra stated.

University of Pretoria Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology Dean Prof Wynand Steyn stated the collaboration would strengthen educational and research ties between the 2 nations.

He stated, “By combining our experience in engineering, mining, metallurgy and expertise innovation, we goal to contribute in the direction of future-focused options that assist accountable useful resource improvement, data change and industry-relevant research.
