At the starting of the 12 months, I texted three previous associates to see in the event that they fancied a getaway. I recommended one thing easy: someplace heat, a brief flight away, someplace in Europe. “You know, like the old days,” I stated. “We could hop onto Skyscanner and look at deals?”
“Ooh yes,” Came the first reply. “Although it might have to be later in the year – we’ve got a christening, a wedding, a work trip, and then a family thing…”
“Ah, sorry! I’m moving house, it’s all a bit crazy right now,” got here one other.
“I’d love to,” stated the subsequent. “But I’m meant to be taking it easy – doctor’s orders. Maybe next year?” (she was closely pregnant and due in just a few months).
Life was busy and complex, filled with endings and thrilling new beginnings, and we weren’t going to discover a date. The concept quietly dissolved. It was laborious sufficient to seek out two hours for espresso, not to mention time for a girl’s trip.

A number of months later, I hosted a creativity retreat in Italy. It was alleged to be a piece trip – as the host, I used to be there to ship workshops based mostly on my bestselling books. But for some cause, this trip felt totally different. It wasn’t fairly the vibe I’d initially supposed it to be – not like from the typical workshop-style retreats I’d hosted or attended earlier than. I often find yourself hovering barely on the edge, in the position of ‘teacher’, but there was something undeniably magical about this combination of women. It felt like a holiday.
One day, I gazed around and realised I was living in what felt like an Instagram photo: so dreamlike it was hard to believe it was real. I was wild swimming in a turquoise lagoon tucked into the Tuscan hills, complete with a waterfall, lush greenery, and a bright blue sky. Around me were a group of like-minded, creative women who had travelled from Portugal, America, and the UK to join the creativity retreat I was hosting. We swam, swapped stories about tattoos, old flames, and where we got our swimsuits. We laughed, floated, and simply enjoyed each other’s firm.
