The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations of sexual harassment against GOP Rep. Chuck Edwards, in response to two sources acquainted with the matter.
The committee was lately contacted by a witness, who described having witnessed improper conduct, the sources mentioned. NCS couldn’t instantly be taught the exact nature of the improper conduct, nor was it clear whether or not the committee had but corroborated any of the allegations.
Asked to reply to the allegations and launching of the probe, Edwards mentioned in an announcement to NCS, “I welcome any investigation, given the professionalism my staff has demonstrated and my commitment to serving the people of Western NC. Given the current political environment we are facing in our nation, it comes as no surprise that others with their own political agendas will attempt to raise false accusations in order to create news stories.”
In latest weeks, the ethics committee has made a public push for anybody with allegations of member misconduct to return ahead, as Capitol Hill is reckoning with tips on how to police its personal. Several members, Republicans and Democrats, have resigned in latest weeks amid numerous allegations of wrongdoing.
The Ethics Committee declined to remark. Ethics investigations can take weeks, months, or years, and the outcomes usually are not at all times made public.
Axios was first to report that the panel had opened a probe into Edwards, although the report didn’t specify that the allegations had been of sexual harassment.
