GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks Herald sports activities editor Tom Miller was named the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NDAPSSA) 2025 Sportswriter of the Year on Thursday. It’s Miller’s third honor from the group since 2020.

The Herald has held the honor 4 instances since the NDAPSSA started choosing its personal winner exterior the National Sports Media Association’s state award winner in 2020. Miller has coated sports activities at the Grand Forks Herald since 2004 and was the state sportswriter of the 12 months in 2019 (NSMA, NDAPSSA), 2022 (NSMA, NDAPSSA), 2024 (NDAPSSA) and 2025 (NDAPSSA).

“The Herald has a long history with this sportswriter award, and I’m really honored to be the latest in a long line of winners from our department,” Miller stated. “Guys like Ryan Bakken, Wayne Nelson and Greg DeVillers … they’re all former winners and set an excellent path for me to follow.”

Miller has primarily coated prep and collegiate sports activities in his time with the Herald. He wrote 188 tales about UND soccer in 2025 alone and filed greater than 400 bylined studies total in the previous 12 months.

“This is a fitting award, again, for Tom, since I know his dedication to his beats — as well as to the Herald — is so strong,” stated Herald Publisher Korrie Wenzel. “Not only is Tom a strong sports editor, but I’m convinced that Tom is as good a writer as any in the region. We’ve had a great run of great sports writers at the Herald, both past and present.”

Three different Herald sports activities reporters have been acknowledged as North Dakota sportswriter of the 12 months by the NDAPSSA since 2009: Nelson (2009), DeVillers (2010, 2020) and Brad Schlossman (2016).

Schlossman has coated faculty hockey for the Grand Forks Herald since 2005. He has been acknowledged by the Associated Press Sports Editors as the high beat author for the Herald’s circulation division 4 instances.
