Habitable Worlds Observatory’s Concept and Technology Maturation: Initial Feasibility and Trade Space Exploration

The EAC-1 (prime row), EAC-2 (center row), and EAC-3 (backside row) designs proven to relative scale. The left column reveals the stowed, launch configuration for every structure and its match contained in the consultant Starship fairing. The center column is trying down the telescope boresight, and the suitable column reveals the top-down view. A sequence of well-established deployments are used to rework between the stowed and operational configurations. — astro-ph.IM

The Habitable Worlds Observatory is the primary telescope ever designed to seek for life and can be a powerhouse of discovery throughout matters in astrophysics.

The observatory was the highest suggestion of the Astro2020 Decadal Survey for big missions and a brand new HWO Technology Maturation Project Office was fashioned in August 2024 to mature the structure, science and know-how.

In this paper we evaluate the general strategy taken to mature the mission idea. We present progress on structure improvement, built-in modeling, science circumstances, and know-how roadmaps in line with pre-formulation research.

We focus on plans for instrument research and worldwide engagement and science engagement together with a Community Science and Instrument Team. Finally, we describe the plan ahead to the Mission Concept Review.
