When Lockerby Composite School Science and Technology Education Program students step into the role of science communicators, the Science North Bluecoats will function mentors and fashions for the Lockerby Greencoats.

Greencoats Meet Bluecoats is a collaboration between the science centre and the highschool, bringing public schooling and science schooling collectively to present Grade 10 Lockerby STEP students the possibility to flex their science communication muscle groups by way of what are termed “Integration Days”.

“Integration Days are a highlight of our year-long schooling model in our revitalized Science Technology Education Program,” stated Ryan Lafraniere, the principal of Lockerby Composite, in a press launch.

He stated Integration Days give students the possibility to study from neighborhood mentors whereas participating in hands-on studying alternatives. Students additionally work collaboratively to construct technological expertise, study engineering design and examine native points whereas enhancing their communication expertise, the press launch states.

The two-day initiative kicked off May 6 at Science North.

Grade 10 STEP students participated in a half-day Science Communication 101 workshop within the Vale Cavern. They explored what science communication is, why it issues, and the way they may use these expertise for ‘Lockerby STEP Greencoats Meet Science North Bluecoats Day’.

Together, Lockerby students discovered tips on how to educate and talk science to Grade 8 students from close by elementary faculties for the official Greencoats Meet Bluecoats Day on May 12.

Greencoats might be tasked with constructing a scavenger hunt and tour narrative (throughout all Science North flooring) that’s participating, age applicable and interactive for younger scientists from Alexander Public School, Copper Cliff Public School, MacLeod Public School, and Princess Anne Public School for the May 12 occasion.

Supported by the Science North Bluecoats across the science centre, greater than 100 Lockerby STEP Greencoats might be mentoring over 150 Grade 8 students from Rainbow Schools.
