Georgia’s inside safety service stated on Saturday that it had arrested three Chinese residents within the capital Tbilisi, for trying to illegally buy two kilograms of “nuclear material” uranium, Georgia’s Interpress information company reported.

Interpress cited the deputy head of Georgia’s State Security Service as saying the three detainees had been planning to buy the uranium for $400,000 and transport it to China, by way of Russia. The uranium was “nuclear material,” it stated, with out elaborating on the motive for the deliberate buy.

It quoted the safety official as saying that the detainees confronted prices that would see them imprisoned for up to 10 years.

The safety of nuclear supplies left over from the Soviet period was one of many largest considerations after the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, of which Georgia was a member. There have been a number of severe incidents involving the illicit commerce in nuclear supplies in Georgia over latest a long time.

In July, Georgia arrested one Georgian and one Turkish nationwide, charged with the unlawful buy, possession and disposal of radioactive substances, which the nationwide safety service stated may have been used to make a lethal bomb.
