Former University of Portland athlete, baseball coach and athletic director Joe Etzel died Dec. 28 at 87.

Etzel, who retired from the Catholic college in 2004, was “the most influential person in UP athletic history,” Nick Daschel wrote in an Oregonian/OregonLive news obituary, noting that as AD Etzel “oversaw an era of significant growth for Pilot athletics, expanding sports offerings at UP from six programs to 16 men’s and women’s sports.”

A funeral mass for Etzel will be held on the Chapel of Christ the Teacher on the University of Portland at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 6, adopted by a reception at Bauccio Commons.

Donations could be made to the Etzel Family Scholarship on the University of Portland.
