SALEM COUNTY, N.J. (WPVI) — There was a standing ovation for former hockey player Matthew Gaudreau, who was inducted into the Salem County Sports Hall of Fame, an honor celebrated by household, associates and former teammates.

Gaudreau’s father, Guy Gaudreau, stated the popularity mirrored years of dedication.

“We’re honored that we’re here. He’s earned it,” he stated.

Gaudreau’s spouse, Madeline, praised his achievements.

“Matty, another accomplishment under your belt. It is such a privilege to stand here tonight and celebrate the remarkable career you had,” she stated.

She added that “watching you do what you love has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

Matthew Gaudreau performed hockey at Gloucester Catholic High School and Boston College earlier than turning skilled and enjoying for minor league groups.

Friend and former teammate Anthony Calabrese stated Gaudreau’s achievements had been properly deserved.

“There’s nothing short of earned. He’s amazing. He’s a great hockey player. I was fortunate to be one of his teammates for a little bit,” he stated.

Matthew and his brother, Johnny Gaudreau, died in 2024 after they had been struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver. On Thursday, a judge denied an appeal seeking to take away the defendant’s statements to police from the upcoming trial.

Loved ones stated they continue to be dedicated to honoring the brothers, who now share a spot within the Hall of Fame.

“I’m really proud of my two sons, and I miss them,” their father stated.

Friend John Bibeau stated the popularity displays the brothers’ affect on native athletics.

“It’s a big deal when you have athletes that are remembered like that in a county like Salem. You wouldn’t expect that, but hard work their whole life paid off for them,” he stated.

“Matty, this is a legacy to leave behind. One that goes far beyond the ice. To everyone who played with him, coached him or cheered him on, thank you for being part of his story. And to the Hall of Fame, thank you for ensuring that story will live on for years to come,” Madeline stated.

The 2nd annual Gaudreau 5K is scheduled for May 16 at Washington Lake Park in Sewell, NJ.
