A new era in transportation has begun in the UAE as passenger train services have been launched between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, providing a speedier alternative to the traditional car journey. The initiative, spearheaded by Etihad Rail, is part of a larger plan to connect the country's major cities through a national rail network.

The launch marks a significant milestone for Etihad Rail, with two new stations added to its existing route between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. Al Yalayis Station in Dubai has become the newest addition to the network, while passenger services have also been extended to Al Dhaid in Sharjah.

The expansion is part of a phased rollout that aims to bring 10 announced passenger stations into operation by March 2027. This ambitious project promises to transform the way people travel across the country, offering a convenient and efficient option for both locals and tourists alike.

Dubai's Al Yalayis Station has been designed with modernity in mind, featuring a sleek glass facade that sets the tone for a seamless travel experience. The station's opening was met with excitement, with many eager to test out the new service.

As I arrive at the station, the atmosphere is electric, with passengers and staff alike brimming with anticipation. The question on everyone's lips is: what can we expect from this innovative new mode of transportation?

The train station's design is a notable aspect of this new transportation mode, boasting grand high ceilings and well-designed seating areas that depart from the usual train-station pews.

To enhance the passenger experience, the service offers various amenities, including free Arabic coffee for all passengers, as well as a dedicated lounge with complimentary food and drinks reserved for Premium class travelers.

For those traveling in standard class but opting for Comfort tickets, there are several convenient options available, such as a Starbucks, Shot Neighbourhood Coffee, WHSmith, and soon-to-open McDonald's on the platform, along with vending machines selling affordable hot meals.

In addition to these amenities, passengers can also access a range of food and beverage outlets during their journey, providing ample choices for travelers.

Access to the platforms is facilitated through escalators, lifts, or stairs, all clearly marked and spacious enough to accommodate large passenger volumes.

The train's interior is a testament to the UAE's emphasis on comfort and luxury. The carriages boast high-end finishes such as charging ports, foldable tables, shutters, and free Wi-Fi, creating an atmosphere of elegance and refinement.

Passengers in Comfort class can enjoy ample room thanks to cushioned seats, while those opting for Premium seats can recline and unwind with even more space to stretch out. The attention to detail is evident throughout the train's design.

As the train departs from the station, passengers are treated to a selection of complimentary refreshments, including Arabic coffee and chocolates. Later on, a snack box is handed out containing two shawarma sandwiches, a cake, and a bottle of water, all part of the ticket price.

One of the standout features of Comfort class is the availability of karak, a spiced tea that's intensely creamy and sweet. This specialty drink was created by Emirati chef Maitha Warshaw and has received praise from high-ranking officials, including Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The train's route offers an interesting perspective on the emirate as it passes through industrial zones, farmland, and arid desertscapes. The journey takes one hour and four minutes to complete, with speeds averaging 200 kilometres per hour, a speed that will increase in the future when high-speed services become available.

As you emerge from the tunnel leading into Abu Dhabi, the platform and station at Mohamed bin Zayed City become a flurry of activity, filled with commuters rushing to catch their trains.

The convenient location of the station places it in the heart of the residential area bearing its name, making it easily accessible to local residents. Nearby attractions include Dalma Mall and Mussaffah, which offer a range of shopping and dining options.

A public shuttle bus service is also available for those who need to travel further into Abu Dhabi, with routes connecting the station to key destinations such as ADNOC headquarters on Corniche Road West, the ADNEC Centre on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, and Reem Mall on Reem Island. The fare for this service is a reasonable Dh10 ($3).

The introduction of high-speed train services has transformed the daily commute between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, making it faster and more convenient for residents and visitors alike, marking a significant milestone in the country's transportation infrastructure.
