Dior Revives 13 Vintage Fragrances through Ambitious Restoration Project
Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian led the four-year project to restore Dior's vintage scents to their original glory.

Dior has embarked on its most ambitious fragrance project yet, aiming to restore 13 of its vintage scents to their original glory. The task was inspired by the realization that perfume formulas change over time due to regulations and industry tweaks. This evolution can significantly alter a scent's character, as seen in Edmond Roudnitska's Diorama from 1949.
Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian led this ambitious project, known as the Diororiginals collection. It took four years of meticulous work to complete. The goal was not to modernize these classic fragrances but rather to capture their authentic essence through a contemporary lens.
"The question was not to make them modern even though there's modern ingredients," Kurkdjian explained, "it's to make them feel old." This approach required careful consideration and attention to detail to preserve the original character of each scent.
Dior's perfumer has emphasized that reformulating fragrances is a common practice in the industry, but restoring 13 vintage scents posed an even greater challenge.
The formulas for some of these classic perfumes were not owned by Dior itself, but rather by external suppliers such as IFF and Givaudan. This added complexity to the restoration process, requiring the team to navigate licensing agreements and intellectual property rights.
To recreate the original fragrances, Kurkdjian's team measured new trials against in-house recreations of the originals.
The restored fragrances are nothing short of masterful, paying tribute to Dior's rich history and the perfumers who contributed to its iconic scents.
Standouts from the collection include Forever and Ever, a 2002 fragrance by Jean-Pierre Béthouart that blends rose and musk with a nostalgic yet fresh quality. Another notable scent is Dolce Vita, Pierre Bourdon's 1995 creation featuring woody vanilla notes of peach and rose.
