A much-needed break from the chaos of daily life was just what I needed after a hectic start to the year.

The idea of escaping to a peaceful retreat had been on my mind for weeks, and finally, I felt ready to take the plunge.

I began searching for the perfect hideaway, one that would allow my partner and me to disconnect from the world and recharge in solitude.

In order to truly unwind, we needed a place where we wouldn't have to interact with anyone but each other.

The ideal location also had to be within easy reach of our home in northwest London, ideally no more than two hours' drive away, and offer a tranquil atmosphere far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life.

A rural setting was non-negotiable, as I'd grown tired of being woken up by noise pollution from neighboring apartments or traffic.

I recalled a charming Airbnb listing on Instagram that I had saved months ago, and it seemed like fate was nudging me towards a staycation in the picturesque Cotswolds region.

The quaint village of Adderbury proved to be an idyllic base for our weekend getaway, and I decided to book one of the two 16th-century thatched-roof cottages available through Strawtop Cottages.

As we settled into Strawtop Two, the cozy atmosphere enveloped us in a warm and inviting glow. The beamed living room was illuminated by switched-on lamps, while kindling was ready to be lit in the wood-burning fire.

The kitchen was a haven of fresh delights, with a loaf of sourdough bread sitting proudly on the chopping board. Organic eggs and marmalade were neatly arranged on the counter, accompanied by Daylesford butter, bacon, and rosé chilling in the fridge.

My partner began preparing a simple supper while I explored the rest of the cottage, discovering a charming dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows that allowed natural light to flood in. A vibrant bunch of fresh flowers added a pop of color around the back, and a boot room was equipped with Barbour jackets, sturdy Wellies for outdoor excursions, and umbrellas, a practical touch considering our visit in April.

The owners' attention to detail was evident throughout the cottage, from the plush finishing touches to the preservation of original Grade II-listed features. The property's history, spanning centuries, had been beautifully restored by local content creator Josie Irons and her husband Charlie, who now manage the properties with care.

Their renovations have struck a perfect balance between preserving the past and adding modern comforts that make staying here feel like a luxurious retreat from the world outside.

The cottage's kitchen was what initially drew me in - its warm, sunny pictures and vintage copper pans caught my eye.

Beyond the kitchen, I discovered a charming layout with two bedrooms: one on the first floor boasting minty green walls, while the other, tucked into the eaves on the top floor, featured tongue-and-groove woodwork.

Other touches that added to the cottage's charm included Bamford pillow mist left next to the beds and blackout blinds that created a remarkably dark and quiet sleeping environment.

The bed linens were so comfortable that I slept soundly for the first time in months, wrapped up in their warmth.

The culinary highlights of our stay were courtesy of Charlie's recommendations, who had booked us a table at The Norman Knight for supper. The experience did not disappoint, with my perfectly cooked steak frites leaving me feeling rather pleased with myself for discovering this hidden gem.

Sunday lunch was another treat, as we enjoyed bowls of cauliflower cheese and crispy potatoes at The Duke of Cumberland's Head - it was one of the tastiest roasts I've had in a while. Having Charlie on hand to make these arrangements was a significant advantage, and I would highly recommend booking through him for this property.

Back at the cottage, we spent some time relaxing together, reading the paper and watching Netflix in the cozy living room. I took note of several design details that caught my eye, including an antique coffee table filled with magazines and books nestled into recesses in the stone chimney.

The cottage's amenities included a deep-green rainfall shower stocked with Bamford products, as well as a Steamery steamer and Dyson hairdryer in the bedroom vanity - all of which would make me very happy if I could replicate them in my own home.
